Will have 3rd care for a while - insurance question

I have my car - we'll call it Car A
My wife has her car - Car B

I'm going to buy Car C and sell Car B privately
Will move the insurance from Car B to Car C

I'm going to have to get some work done on Car B before I can sell it. I can drive it on my own insurance (fully comp) but if I get stopped by the gardai for any reason am I ok seeing as the car itself isn't insured.
Presume I'll have had to return the insurance disk so am I in trouble at check points for not displaying insurance disk?

    Thanks

Your third party extension would only cover cars you don't own.

Afaik the car would still need to be ins for your ext to cover you.

    Yeah that's what I thought.

Not sure how to manage it then.

Just call your insurance company. And report back here as I may have a similar position coming up. :D

I had a similar situation last year, with Aviva you can change over yourself online up to 6 times without charge,if you phone up it costs €25 each time

Just on this, last year I made good use of their temporary switches, I think I used it 5 times.

Come renewal I was accused of being in the "motor trade" despite being a primary school teacher and offering to provide proof of employmemt. I was d1cked about for 2 days as they did some investigating until I finally got a price for renewing. I was met with a €800 price hike.

On the third party extension side of things Aviva as of the last year want whatever other car you may be driving to have insurance also for driving of other cars extension to work.

This isn't the case with liberty and a few other insurers, your own driving of other cars extension is enough to cover you driving another "road legal" car which doesn't belong to you.

I had to stick with them only insurers offering a half reasonable quote,no claims in 30 years of driving,a diesel Passat estate, living in the country and most of the quotes around a thousand euro

    OP here

I rang my insurance company & I can drive any car that doesn't belong to me as long as it's road-worthy (i.e. valid NCT)

The third car we're getting (Car C above) will be in my wife's name so I should be ok to drive any of the 3 cars on my own policy.

Yes, but throw up who owns or is the registered owner of the 3 cars. All three need insurance but a person can only be insured on one car. 2 people into 3 cars does not work.

After collecting the car & swapping over the insurance from my wife's current car (Car B) to the new car (Car C) the situation will be as follows

    Car A
    I'm the owner
    It's insured

    Car B
    Wife is owner
    It's not insured

    Car C
    Wife is owner
    It's insured

Have ran through it with my insurance company & I can drive any of the 3 cars on my own insurance as long as the car is road-worthy.

I thought for you to drive another car on your policy - it had to be insured?

Only with Aviva. The majority of the rest have no such rule.

Afraid I don't get that one, if Car B is uninsured, it has no insurance disc. Gardai will impound car as how can you prove the car is insured because no insurance cert has the reg?

Presume if stopped I'd have to bring my insurance details to a garda station to prove I was insured.

I get ya but your insurance would not have the registration for Car B. Not knocking you as am as eager to know legally what the position is. Have a similar situation and looking at options.
