Family emergency no passport

A family member has been taken ill in another country and we need to get there quickly as time is running out. The thing is one of our passports is out of date. I've looked into an emergency passport on the the department of foreign affairs website but it doesn't really give much information. The rapid renewal service need to have flights booked but we're afraid to book anything without a passport as they're hugely expensive and we can't afford to risk missing them as we wouldn't be able to pay a second time. Anybody know how to organise this? If we book a flight for tomorrow would that be too soon?

Phone your TD first thing in the morning, explain the situation and ask for their help.

I know that there is a person in foreign affairs, whose job is to process emergency passports and it's very quick, within hours. They won't be open until 9.00 a.m. though. Can you hold off booking the flight until you speak to the dedicated person tomorro? AFAIK you deal directly with foreign affairs, rather than trying to contact the passport office.

I just found an out of hours number on the website for emergencies, 01 4082000, try phoning that now.

I was unfortunately in a similar situation a couple of years ago and realised my passport had just expired the night before the flight the following evening.
A midnight dash to a Garda station for the forms, found a kiosk for the pictures, back to the station to get everything stamped and was standing outside the door of the passport office first thing in the morning with evidence of the urgency of the situation and all other documents in hand.
There was a person there who went over the situation with me, almost like triage, and it was he who decided on the genuine cases to go through for having your application processed.
Had my new passport in hand at 4.00 pm that afternoon and was on the plane at 6.30.

Thanks for all that info. I rang the department on that number and the duty officer is going to ring me back to tell me what needs to be done.
