Anyone know (tried and tested) if transfer of ownership is marked as August 1st, can you declare car off-the-road until Aug 21st or Aug 22nd (online)? Thanks.

You can only declare a car off the road for a minimum of three months, however you can put it back on the road at anytime within those three months by taxing it.

I don't see what declaring it off the road until late august is going to achieve though as you pay motortax from the start of the month so it will be backdated to august the first anyway.

If you don't need the car within the next month why not declare it off the road for three months then tax it from the 1st of September on.

Or did I misread your question? Are you saying have you that timeframe to declare a car off the road? If so you have 21 days from the date of sale with the day of sale counted as well.

It usually didn't work online for me either when I just bought a car and was making a new declaration but things might of changed since then.

Just declare it off the road for 12months.

    It's the same effort

Yes, this is what I was asking and it answers my question, thanks.

Just to make you aware. The clock starts ticking from the day you buy it. That's day 1 of 21.

Many people are caught out by it.
