    Hi folks,

I am looking at purchasing a 2013 Volkswagen CC 2.0 diesel. I think the cars emissions is around 120.

Seems to be a lot of attention on Diesel engine cars of late, and there pollution.

Has anyone any thoughts or insight into the possibility tax will be reviewed/ hiked on diesel cars over coming years?

I'm wondering would I be better looking at a petrol rather then a diesel.

    Thanks.

    D

There were recommendations at the last budget for the duty on diesel to be equalised with petrol over a couple of years so they would both be the same but Michael Noonan ignored them. Nobody knows but I would assume with all the anti diesel talk that it will go up in the budget.

Does your mileage and driving suit a diesel, if you just potter around the town doing small 10-15 minute journeys it won't. Look in to DPF failure, usually resulting from small journeys where the filter gets clogged and then fails.

There is alot of uncertainty around diesel cars at the moment just like there was with petrol cars around this time 10 years ago. There is also some added hysteria doing the rounds too from areas with a vested interest.

The only thing that is for sure is that the motorist whether you drive a petrol, diesel, hybrid or electric vehicle will not come out better off. The Government get a steady stream of revenue from the motorist and that will be maintained no matter what propulsion system powers your vehicle.

Can't see any drastic action on current cars. Going forward they may up motor tax rates for new diesels and flag it well in advance. This is Ireland, they coukd lose votes. Nothing remotely drastic will happen. Also few euro on extra motor tax or fuel is a Mickey Mouse cost in terms of overall car ownership cost

There is going to be a rise in car tax this year, that is a near certainty but its not going to rise drastically, they'll most likely increase all bands by €10-30 and probably the same for the pre 08 cars too. They'll increase it again next year and the following one so in 3 years time they'll be getting anywhere from €50-100 per car a year extra.
