Insufficient postage - item lost?

    Morning,

I sent an item out to a customer during the week and posted with a 1e stamp instead of 1.65e stamp.

While this has never been an issue before, the customer just wrote to me and stated they have not received the item.

If there was insufficient postage, does anyone know where the item ends up? I've always been of the understanding that if an item has insufficent postage the buyer has the option to pay.

Did this ever get approved? If so its in the bin.
An Post could end up throwing away letters that don't have enough postage paid on them under new terms it wants to impose on customers.
And consumers could end up insuring letters to carry cash but get nothing back if the mail gets lost.
The regulator Comreg has highlighted a number of serious concerns it has with new terms and conditions proposed by An Post.

If it has a return to sender address that's what happens, or a label is applied to state that it has been delayed due to underpayment. If neither it goes to the return letters branch. The option whereby a recipient could pay was never really feasible as postmen don't carry a float.

Why did you not pay the 1.65e from the start and you would not have created a problem for yourself and your customer?

They will never ask the addressee for the extra.

If they can find out who sent it, they will send it back with an "insufficient postage" label attached.

It is returned to sender if a return address is found either on or inside the envelope, if no return address is found it is send on to the customer with a sticker explaining it was delayed due to insufficient postage. Can be delayed for a couple of days.
