Oil or gas boiler for central heating

    Hi

    I've just bought a house which is 20 years old and the existing oil boiler is fairly knackered. I plan to get the entire system updated starting with a power flush, new cyclinder, new heating controls with zoning and the new boiler. However should I stick with oil or go with gas which is available in the estate? I've heard a condensing gas boiler is the most efficient plus I won't runout of gas unlike the oil tank going empty.

    What would you recommend then, stick with the oil or go with the gas? Any recommendations on a good condensing boiler?

    Finally, if I do ditch the oil, where could I dispose of the tank which is a plastic one?

    Go with gas if it's mains and not a community tank.

    Put old tank on adverts.ie.

    Gas if the mains are outside. Easy easy easy and reliable. Cheap connection too

    Sorry to thread hijack but is mains gas cheaper than oil ? I use 1500 litres of oil per year .

    Roughly €820 per year oil if a single fill which is v unlikely. Gas is roughly equivalent to 13000kwh which is quite high. Look up the suppliers and you'll get a comparison.

    50/50

    Comparing good new high efficiency oil and gas boilers.
    You can't compare old against new, be it oil or gas.

    Natural gas is slightly cheaper per kw. to run.
    But repairs can be more expensive and gas boilers won't last as long as oil boilers.

    Hence my "personal" opinion on the decision been 50/50

    Oil needs an oil tank and big outlay for fuel oppose to a gas bill every two month's.

    Gas is outside the driveway and I've been quoted just €220 to bring it to the house and install a meter.

    Next question is what should I expect to pay for a new gas condensing boiler for a three bed semi detached with garage conversion?

    Excluding piping from the new meter to the boiler you'll be looking at at least 2,500 incl powerflush. That could rise easily depending on the gas pipework route and piping into the existing system
