Looking at TV broadband options for home

Have family with young kids. Left Sky because poor Channel choice for kids. VM I wanted to go with but they can't provide broadband to my area of Dublin.

I was thinking of meteor prepay or bill pay broadband...25GB or 50GB and get a basic to package and Netflix. Cheaper than €80 for tv phone and broadband with all providers.

How much GB would I need for Netflix use? I'm clueless as to how much that alone might use and if a mobile broadband like above would be adequate?

It won't be. You're looking at 100-300GB/mo if you've a few hours watching a day.

Has saorview any kids content? That'd be a good start.

Sky is brill for kids at least 20 different channels with huge variety for all ages.
    Kids TV
Over 4,500 episodes on demand, in one place and on their very own planner. Plus get the Sky Kids app at no extra cost.

During the daytime both RTE 2 and RTE Junior carry kids programming.

Also UK Sat has the likes of CBeebies and there are others too I think - no longer need them here :D

you need a fixed broadband service if you plan to stream any content/watch Netflix. If Virgin are in your area you won't do better than them for speed vs price and they are totally unlimited usage. 55 euros per month for 240 meg broadband with Virgin. Mobile broadband is not fit for purpose for anything other than social media/emails/very light usage.

Sky has more children's channels/entertainment than any other service.

Op here. Thanks for all the responses.

Virgin media can't provide 240mb per second only 30mb, I will have unlimited downloads.

They said lower speed won't affect me but I'm sceptical. Can anyone put into practical terms what effect 30mb v 240mb download speed may have in terms of steaming or watching films online etc?

Depends on the area. 30Mb only means you're in an area that hasnt been upgraded in a good while. If your neighbours are light users it'll be fine, if not it could be quite slow but probably still enough for one stream.

Thanks. Houses are around 60 years old and most of the residents have been living there just as long. So I'm hoping those in their mid 80s aren't heavy internet users.

My only broadband source is tethering with Three on a prepay sim. I use this all day to stream Spotify and every evening to stream Netflix on top of general internet usage, 100+ GB per month with no issues.

It's likely sub-optimal for an entire family to be using at the same time though.

    From personal experience

Three have a 60gb plan that si now €42 a month.

Average hour of netflix is 800mb once you have it on the lower setting (not HD).

To be safe, that equates to 2 hours a day.

Better package is broadband only deal from pure telecom @ €44 per month (they use eir lines) + netflix

Eir have a €65 offer of broadband + tv inc eir sports which is quite good. Price stays same for the 18 months too. https://www.eir.ie/broadband-only/ add netflix and you have as much tv & broadband as you ever want for about €73. Phone line is included but no inclusive calls.

How much is that costing you though. VM mobile which I just signed up to unlimited broadband offer is 30gb.

Thanks I've signed up to VM tv broadband and phone for 54 a month for 12 months. I don't think I'll get any cheaper package...I'd get better broadband I know.

A 30mb line is plenty for streaming video content. If you can get that with an uncapped usage limit then that'd be ideal ideal based on what you've said you're looking for.

240mb would be overkill for your situation. In my house there's just the two of us but an any given time I can be playing Xbox online while my missus is streaming HD Netflix - I would often even have some torrents downloading at the same time and there is no noticeable drop-off. For reference I'm on 50mb line

Huh? Ive got Vodafone 4g here for over a year now, 150gb monthly limit for €60, very good speeds never drops out. Running Netflix, sky q, Spotify and all the rest of it with no issues. Lots of people in the sticks can only choose between eir with dial up speeds or mobile broadband.

Very happy with the Vodafone 4g big thanks to Vodafone for providing such a good service!

Mobile broadband (midband really) wasn't designed for that type of usage. If more people in you area decide to use Vodafone 4G for the same purposes as you, your service will degrade significantly, unlike fixed line broadband.

Fair enough if you have no other option, but OP had Virgin available to him. The idea of even considering mobile broadband vs actual Virgin, fixed line broadband is crazy.
