    I don't know....
On the one hand, it'd be nice to play Mario 64 again, especially if it's all sharp, full speed and upscaled.
On the other hand, it'd be even nicer to play Waverace 64, all sharp, full speed and upscaled, with rumble.
On the other hand, it'd be fantastic indeed to play Blastcorps, OoT, MM, MK64, Rouge Squadron, Pod Racer, SF Rush, DK Racing and Goldeneye (please!) again....
On the other hand..... There is no other hand!
    This is a great idea!!!

Being honest I don't think many early 3D games from the N64/PS1/Saturn era have aged well. They can either look very ropey and/or the frame-rate is poor.

Although if they sorted the frame-rate it would be interesting.

Would love to see this happen but as already mentioned a lot of the games haven't aged well.

The 1st party stuff still holds up very well but some of the 3rd party games look pretty brutal these days.

Getting say 20 N64 games would be a great value proposition if they still priced it around €80. It would HAVE TO have 4 controller ports though!

Pointless thread at this stage. Absolutely no evidence whatsoever of a N64 Classic Mini coming. I don't think it'll happen for a whole host of reasons. Games haven't aged well, license issues with some classics(most notably Goldeneye), not enough classics, Rare - probably the biggest issue. Even IF it were to happen, it's at least a year away.

A patent term lasts 20 years, the N64 just recently turned 20 in Europe. So Nintendo are protecting a trademark. Case closed.

Nobody said there was evidence, it's just interesting that they've used the same graphic artwork style in the patent, as they've used for the other recent classic logos. It could be nothing, or could be suggestive that the idea is moving forward.

Why just the controller image so?

The current frenzy of people buying the Crash trilogy would suggest otherwise.

It's certainly an interesting proposition, and I don't think anyone is the arbiter of what is a pointless thread and what isn't, a thread will die on the vine if it has no one interested enough to read it.
    Bit mean spirited tbh.

And Nintendo have established a pattern now of releasing nostalgic editions of classic consoles, I don't see any reason why the N64 should be any different, given the cart based nature of the device would lend itself to such a classic machine.

Rare aren't as big a deal as you might imagine, given the frankly unimpressive nature of many of their games, in hindsight, as experienced via the Rare Replay compilation on the XB1, I rather think that Nintendo's 1st party releases on the format was superior, Goldeneye aside.

If it were released, I wonder how they'd handle the controllers?

They're absolutely massive and would look ridiculous alongside a mini console.

Completely rebuilding a 20 year old game in a new engine is slightly different to emulating a 20 year old game on cheap hardware, no?

I'll admit, the improved visuals are a draw but I don't think that new IP built around the self same type of level design would have drawn the punters in the same way.
Might well be, and this is pure speculation, that the presence of the Crash level in Uncharted 4 gave inspiration for the making of the Crash Trilogy title.

And, if the Classic Mini preorder craze has shown anything, it's that people shouldn't underestimate in any way the mad popularity of classic titles in modern hardware formats.
Certainly, if you haven't played N64 games on an NTSC N64, you really haven't experienced them at all.
I've said it before, but Waverace 64 is an complete revelation, even now, when played at the proper speed and screen ratio, rather than the hobbled version we unknowingly got back in the day.
A set of N64 games running at full speed, Mario 64, Waverace 64, Pilotwings 64 and 1080° Snowboarding are still pretty amazing, and worth buying a possibly N64 Mini Classic for.
The controllers though, might be a need to release either full size ones or something more traditional...

They could probably go with (what has since become) a more traditional controller, or effectively a two pronged version of the N64 controller, as it was rare that you'd use the D pad prong at all.

Or it spirtual successor perfect dark, that game was amazing too aswell as B&K

    I would caution on Goldeneye.
The Perfect Dark HD remake wasn't half as much fun as the N64 original, I think we've just gotten too accustomed to the evolution of the genre over the last 20 years.

No conker no dice, so many n64 game licences would be up too, kinda wish sega would do a Saturn one rather than the overly flogged megadrive, I would love a virtual boy mock up vr headset seeing as when I had my one briefly in 1999 I was deep in epilepsy country which is now dormant. Sold it for a song.

Replaying the Saturn is a little rough, I've Burning Rangers and it doesn't look great these days, though I recall it being outstanding.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,282 ✭✭✭✭RobbingBandit

Lunar Silver Star would be one I'd want skeleton warriors too but licence issues would be nuts on that this damn nostalgic nonsense will consume us all. Member the 32x I member, member marathon bars I member.

I remember Marathon bars. I remember when they were about 25p and I remember when the King size was 100g, they were 50p. Now it's called Snickers Duo, weighs 83.4g and costs €1.25 on a good day in a non rip-off shop. I used to love going to the shop as a kid and buying a King size Snickers and a 500ml can of Canada Dry for £1. Those were the days.

I can recall buying ha-penny lolly pops and black jacks and fruit salad, ten for ten p.
I can also vividly remember spending £60 on an unboxed copy of Virtua Racing for my Megadrive, as it was like hens teeth back then. Still love it now.
I enjoyed chasing bargains around Dublin, from Gamesworld to Bookmark & Gamesexchange, fun times.
They was the 90s, in the 80s it was going through Virgin Megastore, QTH, Clerys and Harry Moore's looking for games for my Spectrum.... Great times too!

Peats on Parnell Street was a favorite of mine for Nes games bought my Zelda II there.

I remember when Dunnes used be decent for bargain SNES games, never know what would be there for £20.

And when my local Quinnsworth had demo units in the Lifestyle section.

Rainbow Islands for C64 in Virgin... What a day... Although I tended to do my regular game shopping upstairs in Easons dun laoghaire. Way of the exploding fist for 3.99. boom. There was a game rental place off a side street of O'Connell street and I remember working out the cost of dart fares and c90s and all the time spent walking and hi-speed-dubbing to conclude it was more cost effective to just buy the odd game.

QTH! It sounds really familiar but I can't place it. Spill - I feel a self-kicking is imminent.

It was up on Dawson Street, opposite the mansion House, long long time ago.
I got some Spectrum games there once upon a time.

Back on topic, if they were to release a 64 mini I'd be happy with 12-15 decent games on it. Mario 64, Mario Kart, Golf, Tennis and maybe one of the parties, the two Zelda's, Pokemon stadium and Snap maybe, Smash Bros, if they could get a few rare games then great, if not then maybe Turok or something like that.

I got my first game for the C64 there, a game called Ant Attack! :)

Funny you mention that shop off O Connell Street but that was Kevin Neery (spelling?) who went onto own the Gamesworld franchise and eventually sell it to GameStop, I think he still is a top dog in GameStop Ireland or has interests in it...

Lovely fella, a friend of my Auntie...

Back on topic, I used to work there many moons ago around the time of the N64 release, I remember there was a Japanese Ultra 64 before the western release with Mario 64, it seemed about a year or two we had to wait for the Pal release of "our model" 64... :)

Games I'd like to see on a mini :

    Pilotwings 64
    Wave Race 64
    MK64
    Blast Corps
    1080 Snowboarding
    Kirby
Goldeneye (I know Rare would not allow it)
    Yoshi's Story

Not sure if it will happen though with all the licensing issues that will arise

I was in and around there at that time too.... small world and all that.
I worked in the Abbey St store mostly, the one at the back of Chapters, with Eddie, and spent some time in the Liffey St store too.
This was back in 96->00 or so, spent a few more years working Christmases too, mostly in Liffey St and, later, out in the Santry branch.
I worked there part time on my days off from my day job, which is working as a nurse in Intellectual Disability.
    Great times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,580 ✭✭✭✭Riesen_Meal

Very small world, I didn't work there that long, a few months iirc, but I did mainly Liffey and Chapters myself, used to work with a culchie guy called Shane I think was his name and some NZ or Ozzie chick with dreads if memory serves, I'm Dave - was around summer 98 to sometime in 99 I was there...
