When it comes to crisps...

...there always seems to be less in a pack of salt n vinegar compared to cheese n onion.

I've been saying this for years.

Particularly noticeable of late with Manhattan crisps. Is the flavouring more expensive so they cut back on the amount?

Also what's with people from certain areas of Dublin calling them, "Crips"?

Sure reading the ingredients would solve this?

maybe the flavouring is heavier? hence less crisps, though ultimately the same weight.

Do they not list the weight on the bag?

    An homage to this.

It's not a Dublin person thing, I grew up outside of Dublin hearing some people call them that. It's a learned can't/don't pronounce a word correctly thing.

The greater humidity in Ireland means the air between the crisps is laden with
moisture increasing the gross weight of the package of crips.

Didn't you know there is a worldwide salt & vinegar shortage. Stocks have never been so low, it's something to do with melting ice caps and solar flares.

Brannigans crisps are notorious for only giving you a few crisps in the bag, no matter what the flavour.

No but we should have an experiment.

    Weigh and count.

I'd do it myself but I'm not buying any poisonous salt and vinegar shyte.

As for the 'crips' use of this term means the person is working class and not to be trusted.

Has anyone noticed Hunky Dorys are putting less and less in the bag? They used to be the one ya can rely on for a decently filled bag!

I noticed the same thing; full four fingers in the shop, shrank to nothing at all by the time I got home.

    Bloody ripoff.

I know of (manky) Manhattan popcorn, and their peanuts, but I've never seen the crisp products. Are they only sold in certain areas? Manhattan, maybe?

Manhattan popcorn is epic, pour in a packet of cheese & onion King crisps and they become orgasmic.

Also Manhattan salted peanuts are 157 times better than the KP salted peanuts.

the big bags of buffalo hunky dorys have way more flavour dust than the regular packets.

just sayin in case anyone didn't know...

Their cheese & onion crisps are fucking deadly, too.

all chocolate bars are wayyyyyy smaller than they used to be in the 80s.

Snickers are shockingly small now. Yorkie and Toblerlone have recently reduced in size dramatically.

    Did you try weighing?
"Seems" can be an inexact measurement.

Manhattan peanuts are grand. I just think all popcorn is rotten, not just the Manhattan variety.

O Donnell cheese and onion, for quality and quantity. You've got to pay to get the good stuff.

What about the colouring of packages?

In my mind it should be as follows:

    Blue = Salt and Vinegar
    Red = Tomato or Spicy
    Green = Cheese and Onion
Brown = Barbecue or Smokey Bacon

Whenever I head over to the UK, I try to bring back some salt 'n shake from Tescos. Throw away the salt, which must be the weight of at least 2 crisps. Wonder why they cannot simply do the 'n shake bit and top up :(

When you are young the bag seems bigger.

When you are old the bag seems smaller.

    Science.

My Dad had a multipack of those in the house the other day.
I don't know where he bought them but he only shops in Dunnes and goes into Dealz too so it's got to be one of those.

I think I saw them in Dealz alright, but it would have been a couple of months ago at this point.

I thought they pumped nitrogen or something into the packs to make them last longer?

They did recently reduce the size of all chocolate bars because we running out of cocoa, or we're all too fat or something. It was in the news.

The crips gang colour is blue, just like a packet of salt and vinegar crisps.

I think that's done to remove all the oxygen before sealing it up.

I wonder how they keep the chips so fresh and crisp inside those plastic bags?
    Nitrogen And Nitrogen

Yes, nitrogen. Did you ever notice how a potato chip bag feels a little bit inflated?

It’s almost like a little balloon.

Potato chip bags are not full of air, but of nitrogen gas.

This is done to prevent the chips from oxidizing, which is part of what makes them go stale.

Oxygen is very reactive, and likes to combine with other molecules whenever it can, causing chemical changes to take place.

Nitrogen, however, is very stable and unreactive.

A so-called “nitrogen atmosphere” is good for storing foods that oxidize quickly, like potato chips and bacon.

Although many people think air is the same thing as oxygen, about seventy-eight percent of the air we breathe is actually nitrogen gas.

Nitrogen is all around us.

They're okay but wouldn't be my favorite. They seem too hard and cut into your mouth. I'm sick of seeing the same old cheese and onion everywhere and to hell with nearly everything else. Ready salted, Prawn cocktail? Meanies are my favorite and when i can get them i do. My local Supervalu is rubbish when it comes to stocking crisps and other various items. Nearly always out of stock.

Must go up North and stock up on some Northern Tayto soon.. Beef and Onion, Roast Chicken and the like!

Why can't Southern Tayto introduce a few new flavours!
