I changed a valve a few months ago and noticed how dirty the water that came out of the rad was. Seeing it summer time would there be any benefit to flushing the entire system using one of the flushing products.

I have an open vented oil heated system.

Depends on how you intend to do it
By machine with magnetic filters or just a straight flush
It should be done by use of a power flush machine with a magnetic filter attached with the proper chemicals been used to get optimal results

Looking in to it a bit today, I didn't realise I could hire the machine. Might do that.
Because I have an open system, do I need to do something with the expansion tank when using the machine?

The vent and expansion tank need to be capped off

How do you cap the tank, vent is easy enough. Have you used these machines? Are they straight forward.

Not being smart but it's easy when you know how. You need a good knowledge of heating systems and how they work. You need identify why the sludging occurred in the first place and alter any pipework. You need to know how to operate the machine, balance the heating system. It's not a DIY job

Ya I understand that, the system is running 15 years with no issues, when I took the rad off a lot of clean water came out until the end which was dirty. Haven't seen one of those machines before and I'm courious about it. Regardless of what the out come I'm not altering any pipe work because Im confident there is not problems. just wants spring clean.
