... before you start ending up in serious masked raider boko haram territory?

At what point does it stop being safe?

About 20 metres, depending on the country you start in.

    Assuming it's Egypt, maybe 100km

Assuming it's Morocco, you might get 1,000km. Across a desert. With no fuel stations. Try that in your Nissan Leaf. :D

I suppose your question is - what countries are safe?
The answer is, most of them, as long as you know what you're doing.
You are more likely to get stuck on crap roads than getting robbed and murdered.

Yes I watched Long Way Down and bribes were the way to go. I think the route they took would be a lot more dangerous now, they started off in Tunisia.

Personally, I'd be staying well clear of those places.
Are you planning of shipping your car over and then driving around?

I was thinking for next year drive down into Spain and cross over into Morocco but it gets less interesting if I can't leave Morocco without getting shot at

I think the border to Algeria is closed and Western Sahara is prob best to avoid with mines and crap roads galore.
