The car is off the road for 7 weeks of 12.

Is it possible to pay the tax for week 9-12 and get the car back on the road?

Unless you declared the car off the road, you will be liable to back pay the tax since it last expired.

    (Unless you change ownership)

"Sell" it to "someone", then "buy" it back.

Sorry I should have been clearer.
The car has been correctly declared off the road 7 weeks ago. Now I am trying to figure out if the car can be got back onto the road after week 8

Just tax it. Be aware that if you tax it today, you pay for the full month of July. You can request a reminder PIN from the motor tax website, if needed.

As Benny said , you will pay for the full month of July if you do it now.
The last 6 digits of the serial number of your log book are your pin. Number on top right of front cover.
It should just pick up from the current date doing it online but is temperamental at times. .

Apologies if I come in and ask a question too.:o
Looking at a car this evening and hoping to buy, had it fully checked out and happy with it. Tax is expired since end of March, NCT will expire end of July.
Previous owner did NOT declare it of the road.
Reading the previous posts here, if I buy, I am not liable for the back tax and can go ahead and tax it from August 1st. Is this correct.?
Also, can I go ahead and book an NCT for early August.
    Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Last 6 digits is only for first time taxing.
Any renewals have a random generated code. Just log on and request a new pin.

If you buy it today, you will pay tax for month of July, it goes by date or purchase.

Yes you are not liable for the back tax but will have to pay for july if it goes into your name within july.

    Thanks for replies.
BTW if I get an NCT date in the meantime can I take it on a transporter to the centre. Will they test an untaxed and uninsured car.
I will transfer my present insurance on August 1st anyway.

Tax and off-road declarations are based on months not weeks.

I can assume you declared the car off the road in May for period of June, July and August.

Answer to you question is yes - you can tax it anytime you wish.
If you tax it in July, minimum you will pay is 3 month July, August, September.
If you wait until August with taxing it, it will be 3 months tax for August, September, October.

If you buy in July, you are liable for tax from 1st July, but you can always declare the car off-the-road for July and tax it from 1st August.
Declaration for July can be made retrospectively up to 21 days from date of purchase.

Yes, NCT will test untaxed and uninsured car.

You might even not need a transporter, as you can legally drive untaxed car to NCT centre and back if it's declared off the road, and you can ask someone who has "driving other cars" extension on their policy to drive it for you to the NCT centre. All 100% legal.

The PIN number is always the last 6 digits of the current VRC with the exception of the first time taxing of a new vehicle or imported vehicle in which case it's the last 6 digits of the VIN.

    Sorry, you're wrong.
Last 6 of vin for first time taxing
Last 6 of log book for renewals.
