Insurance for rental car?

I am planning to get a rental cars for about (10-15 days) in Ireland, but also rent across Europe about 10-20 days per year. So far, I have always bought the extra (full coverage) insurance to avoid the costly fee in the case of a scratch (and also for piece of mind, to be honest).

I have heard that it is cheaper to buy insurance elsewhere and not via the rental place. Does anybody have more information on this?

    Best, A.

I saw carhireexcess.ie being recomended a few times.
I've used it the last few times I had to rent a car.

Fortunately I haven't had the need to claim anything, so I can't advise on that side of it.
