Fleas in garden

    Hello all,

I have 5 cats and this year for some reason there is a lot of fleas!

I got frontline and sprayed my cats then I moved to hovering my house cleaning and then spraying everything with flea killing spray (it was called RIP).

Its been exactly week today and I haven't seen any fleas inside of my house or on my cats (cats are actually more lively now) BUT my mom was just sitting on our garden step and three little bastards jumped on her from grass. We did see occasional flea jumping on our pants but that was far from house near bushes. This is getting a little out of hand now. Can't leave house in early/late hours because we will bring fleas back in...

I read a bit about garden pest control and I found that using nematodes would be best and the fastest way. Here is another problem... I can't find it anywhere! Is there anyone out there that knows where to buy this or is there other effective product for garden use out there?

btw. does everyone have problem with fleas this year?

As far as I'm concerned, they get worse each year and I don't know why. I'd imagine a good garden centre is where you'll get advice on nematodes, I'm no gardener so haven't gone that route. Failing that, you can get Diatomaceous Earth online, (Willow Organic Farm, in the midlands), it's often used for pest control in the garden (different grades for different applications) and it's effective at killing fleas. I have used it in the house on carpets and mattresses and it works well. I've also read that keeping the grass short is key to controlling them outside as the ground is less damp and attractive to them. I've also (don't laugh) made a strong solution of washing up liquid and water and sprayed it around outside. The grease cutting properties of the soap messes up their waterproof outer layer making life difficult for them. On a different thread, I described how I made indoor flea traps with this solution and it really works. In your shoes, I would order the D.E. and while waiting for it to arrive, I'd get the grass cut short so that the ground can dry a bit before you sprinkle the D.E. around. It's non-toxic to children, pets, and other wildlife but it's not too kind to fleas, ants and other insects that make a nuisance of themselves. I would be careful to sprinkle close to the ground on a preferably still day to avoid dust clouds that might affect bees. I can't think of anything else right now but I think the D.E. and short grass is a good start. Best of luck to you. :)
