The worst Monday of your life

I've just gotten back from abroad and have major holiday blues and nearly threw myself in front of the train this morning on my way into work (joke) (kinda)

It got me thinking about how much of a thing this Monday-hate is among your average 9-to-5-er and realistically, does anything epically sh1t ever actually happen on a Monday? Aside from the humdrum of average every day working life after a bit of a break from the rat race. Has anything historically awful ever happen on somebody's Monday?

    How's your Monday going?

Few weeks into my first post-college job and found out I deleted a quarter million records on the live database for which no backups had been kept for at least a year.

Blamed myself for a good while till I learned enough to recognise I had been working for a real cowboy outfit and should never have been in a position to do that much damage with so little experience.

Right now feels almost as bad coz I got only about 2 hours of sleep last night

This day fifteen years ago I was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, it wasn't a Monday but wasn't much of a fun day either.

I've had unpleasant days at work (and in life generally) but I honestly never associated them with a particular day, so I couldn't tell you if they were Mondays.

I certainly had similar feelings about returning to work when I worked in supermarkets, though it wasn't always Mondays. God, the gut-wrenching horror of that was awful.

Today is going okay though. My officemate hasn't shown up yet, so I'm farting about on here. I hope your Monday goes okay for you, OP.

Maybe it's time to change jobs

If you are going to be dedicating 40 hours of your life to something every week, then at least make it something that is someway enjoyable.

That's their fault for having someone inexperienced with update permissions on their production database..

    Not yours.

Nah the job's alright and the pay's great, I just prefer not working to working as probably most humans do.

Coming back from holidays on a Monday is vile. I came back from Easter hols on a Friday to ease back in and it was fine because it was only 8 hours until I was free again! I don't really mind physically having to go back into work after holidays I just always dread what horrors have appeared on my desk and in my email while I was gone.

My job is always demanding no matter what day of the week (I work in legal) but generally Mondays are grand for me as the boss is always out of the office so I can crack on with my files without the additional pressure. I find Tuesday a tougher day to get through mentally. At least when Wednesday lunch time comes around you can pat yourself on the back for getting through half the week alive. I actually find that Fridays is usually the day that sh*t hits the fan. Usually a client who has had all week to make contact suddenly decides to call at 4pm demanding the earth.

I try not to waste my life away waiting for Friday to come along. Life is too short for that. In saying that I do enjoy my job so its easier for me to get through the week. I can imagine if you hate your job then every day is hell really.

I'm back in the office after a week off, but i stayed at home so it doesnt feel too bad.

Couple of years ago I had an amazing 3 week holiday in Canada, I remember feeling pretty awful coming back in on the first Monday back. The maple sweets I brought back helped.

I actually see a large percentage of people say they couldn't stand not working. Being bored, is the main complaint. I don't understand it. So many tv shows, video games and books. If I had enough money to live comfortably on for the rest of my life, I wouldn't work another day. I'd probably study a lot, though.

Yup, that's what I've since learned. That and the lack of testing of scripts, the "we'll do it live" mentality of the section I was in to get things done faster all contributed. I should never have had access to the live server in the first place.

    ah come on!!?

All that freedom and that's what you'd want to do with it?

Buried my grandfather on a Monday in February two years ago....a long hard day.

Saying that I tend to associated events with dates rather than days so that doesn't affect how I view Mondays in general. It's the date itself that will always get me.

But today all is good as it is my Birthday and this day next week I'll be sunning myself in Majorca so Mondays aren't always a bad thing!

Yup. What would you do? If money was no limit, I'd travel tons as well. But assuming money was a limit, and was being funnelled into not working, then yes. it's what I do now (outside of work hours), and I'm very happy. :)

What would you study for? Presumably to further your career at some point?

I was signed off work sick for a week back in March. Two days of steroids and I felt back to normal again but work wouldn't let me come back. Even though I love television 2 days of being horizontal on the couch binging on box sets and reading was more than enough for me.

If I didn't work and was financially comfortable (not to the point where I could comfortably swan about the world going from beach to beach in which case I would travel forever) I'd need to keep productive. It would probably end up that I would put my time and money into starting a business- even just a cafe or something- and that point I'd be back to work again I guess...

I have a degree and I have signed up to do a night class in psychology, it's just 8 weeks long but I work part time and due to my health I will never have a high flying career but I still like to learn and be stimulated, I enjoy it. Not everything has to be about a career.

No, just to learn things. I did a few courses on Coursera when they were still totally free, I just enjoy learning. I'm currently studying a few modules online/by evening to try retrain for different work, but am again doing additional study I don't need to do simply because I am interested.

I used to read about 120 books a year, that number drops when I'm employed (which is a few years now). I miss reading that much.

If you took that line of thought, no new threads would ever be started.

I literally spent about 20 minutes in the shower weighing up the pros and cons of calling in "sick" this morning.

Pros: Break myself in and tomorrow won't be as bad. Catch up on emails. Chat to boss ahead of bigger boss arriving from NYC tomorrow. Put on makeup and feel like a human again. Bring in holiday sweets and make everyone happy (momentarily)

Cons: BED IS SO COMFY I DON'T WANT TO BE AN ADULT TODAY I LOVE MY BED

Does this involve a balaclava and a grapefruit? Asking for a friend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,336 ✭✭✭HalloweenJack

I've had a few ****ty Mondays down the years that can easily be linked to two or three heavy nights out in the preceeding 72 hours. There's been a few times where it's got to Wednesday before I felt normal again.

Today is a particularly bad one. It's a glorious day outside but even that is failing to lift my spirits even slightly.Seem to have misread signals from a friend of mine and sent her a couple of texts over the weekend regarding how I feel about her, which seem to have gone down like a lead balloon.Working nights this week as well which compounds the misery.
As a whole though Monday's are a lot more bearable since cutting back on the alcohol intake at weekends.

I must admit that today's Monday is going slightly downhill as I sit immediately inside a 7 foot window in direct sunlight, in an office with no aircon, and feel the oddly cool film of sweat that is slowly building on my forehead while I do no more than sit at a desk typing on a computer.

    I hate summer.

You need to send those messages of undying love to everyone in your contacts

It'll lesson the blow for her and let her think you were just off your head all weekend.

Be prepared for a lot flak.

    Mondays are awesome!!!.
I just change jobs from weekdays 9-5 which I've done for past 12 years and gone to 3x12 weekend shift leaving me mon-thurs off :D
No more rushing to get stuff done at the weekend while trying to cramp in everything else. Now I can leisurely get up Monday morning and I've even cut the grass twice in the past 2 weeks :D

Last year, on the Monday (18th July) I had just been discharged from James's hospital having had reconstructive surgery on my face following a dog bite (over 30 stitches before anyone asks), so this Monday isn't particularly my favourite...

I think my Mum's funeral was on a Monday, can't really remember..........she passed away on a Thurs night. Anyway, that Monday wasn't great.

I'd be a pure not Monday person though in general, to be fair.

For me, that question is easy: Monday, June 26th, 2017. I had found out over the weekend that my mom as in a coma in hospital. My dad had been hospitalised as well, and I spent the day desperately trying to arrange flights, etc. to get home to Germany in time. I managed to get to hospital while they were both still alive, but my mom passed away less than two days later, and I didn't get to see her before. The entire two weeks following that day have been a nightmare that I never ever want to experience again!

Good luck trying to figure me out. I haven't managed that myself yet!

My grandmother died in hospital due to bowel cancer on the 11th of February 2008 which was on a Monday. I was only aged 18 years old when she died. I remember being 16 years old & bringing her into hospital on a bus to Dun Laoghaire as she told me she felt very uncomfortable while being in the toilet at home. The nurses told me that they were concerned as they said her stomach was very swollen after they done x-rays on her to see if anything was wrong. I got word from my mam a few days later that the hospital had found a tumor in my grandmother's bowel.

Less than two years later after her diagnosis she died in another hospital in Dublin. Next year is her 10th anniversary in 2018.
