Peugeot 2008 vs Fiat 500XL MPW

I'm finally getting into a position where I can move on from my 2008 Yaris and the above two cars are what I have shortlisted purely based on research online. My budget is 20k max, thinking of going for new as there's excellent scrappage deals at the minute (3500 for Peugeot and 5000 for Fiat) whereas a trade in on an older car I'd be lucky to get 2k I'd imagine.

Any thoughts on these two? Main requirements are good boot space, cheap to run and a few nice extras such as air con etc which I haven't had before. I prefer hatchbacks to saloons, just personal preference. Or anything else I should consider? Hoping to get out for test drives next weekend so would be good to know what I'm looking for

The 2008 is a lovely classy looking thing. Also gets very good reviews. The 500L looks an awkward ugly dumpling and around a bit longer, they've not made much impression here

Had a 500XL for a weeks rental in Italy recently, and I absolutely despised it.

Firstly, the interior had a huge body coloured panel across the dash, which certainly wasn't to my taste, along with the dated, gameboy esque sat nav.

It felt overall, like a big 'small' car, in that there wasn't any more interior/boot room than say a Golf, but dynamically it was like a mpv in comparison and you really felt its bulk on the road.

In summary, you could do way better. In fact the Octavia 1.4 TSi we had the week before was a smashing car, a perfect daily driver in my opinion.
