Looking for a new 8' mower to top and cut the odd bit of silage and hay . I looked at all the main brands and the all came in around the same price I be using a ford 7740 tractor. Would love to hear some opinions on the mowers you use and how reliable are they thanks

Stay away from a marangon unless you are a gentle operator with very smooth level land. Any bit of abuse and it will be in bits, very soft metal in them.

I have a Claas Disco 2650 9' cut bought second hand about 3 years ago for 5k or so. Mostly topping or taking out a few strong paddocks but she does the job well.

The only downside to it is having to unscrew the blade holders to replace lost or damaged blades. Something like the simple spring loaded blade holders in the old PZ mowers would be great but maybe not practical.

I had one before and never again bed came apart in the middle of hay cutting. Wouldn't of minded but it wasn't that old

Krone here. Very reliable, robust and spring loaded flail replacement system.

It also has a system to protect the bed. If you meet a large immovable obstacle it will shear a roil pin allowing the disc rise out of danger. Simply screw back in place and reace roll pin. Hasn't happened us yet.

We do all our own mowing and topping with it, trouble free. We're on our 3rd Krone and won't be changing.

Kverneland 9' here. You would drive it with a swing handle. Well madequipped and we'll finished mower Imo and cuts very clean even in heavy meadows.
Only fault I can see is that maybe the frame holding the cover could be a little more robust but hasn't broken or cracked yet having said that.
Very happy with it overall and was about €2.5k cheaper than a krone and 1-1.5k cheaper than kuhn or pottinger at the time.

Same here, on a 7740 too and works a treat. Do about 40ac silage and hay and about 50-60ac topping a year

Pottinger 9 ft here happy with it only season and a bit done, easy enough change blades, oil in bed. A bit cheaper than kevnerland and more expense that malone when i was pricing them

Looked at a second hand krone with new discs at a reasonable price in a dealers yard only a couple of miles from me

I had a krona am243cv a few years ago. It was a desperate heap of a thing. I bought it 3 years old and never got through a season without a major break. Considering a season for me is 60 acres that Is no boast. It maybe that the first owner was a rough operator, but I'm not sure I'd ever have faith in one again.

That's the model I'm looking at

    I had issues with:

    Bed leaking
    Gears in gearbox stripping
The single bolt holding mower to headstock collapsing
Also the design is such that the mower is pulled along from the bottom corner rather than the top/middle on newer mounted mo/cos. I did a lot if welding in this area.

I am very sympathetic to machines in general, so it was the machines fault to my mind!

What model of Krone mower are you running?

A old drum mower that's been welded to many times its a second hand 243 krone that I'm looking at

Just went through this process last month. Head wrecking
Looked at Malone, Major, Lely, Class, Samaz, Krone & Kneverland

Went with the Kneverland in the finish mostly based on 2 local guys having them for last couple of years with no issues plus they are a decent strong well made mower. Frame for cover might be a bit light as noted by another poster here certainly the galvanized frames on the major & Malone look the job galvanized etc for topping.

Prices ranged from 6.3k to 8k for a Class light duty mower but even the guy selling the Class was advising the heavy duty bed which pushed the class to 10k lovely mower that was but out of my budget for works I'd be at.

Happy out with purchase so far. Couple of meadows cut one fairly heavy for silage bales and one for hay and a shot of topping done. Massive improvement on the 5ft 6 we had previously a few less laps of the fields always welcome.

Have a 10ft lely end pivot and a 10.5ft krone centre pivot and the krone is way sturdier and more stuff in the frame etc. Use both for topping mainly and both are 2014 machines. Wouldn't buy another lely tbh. New bed in it after 15 months.

Have a kroner 9' here as well. Mid mounted model. Have it 2 seasons now 600 a.c. mowing and topping. Very happy with it. easy maintained. Quick change blades are great

Would it be more useful if lads mentioned what model of mower they have instead of simply stating its krone or kuhn because their are several models by most manufacturers

I have a Marangon MDN 210 from new and so far no issues. Though I don't abuse it and it only cuts about 20/30 acres per year.

i've a marangon 245 mounted conditioner mower and while i did think it was a good machine originally, i'm now starting to think its one of the biggest heaps of shi*e i ever bought. unless theres someone here interested in buying it, then its a great yolk.

    kneverland 2624 8'

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 178 ✭✭Sillycave

Anyone running a mower with a conditioner? Does it provide any benefit to the quality of grass for silage or hay?
Looking into getting a mower myself, will be mainly used for cutting hay and tipping.
I know this has been mentioned on here before but can't find where, tks

So what you're saying is that you have a genuine reason for selling

Considering buying the same mower new myself. Any issues with getting blocked up in a crop that's lying down or dragging a swarth after it near the gearbox? Thanks.. They're a strong looking machine..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 364 ✭✭PN14

None so far but to be honest I haven't had it in any really heavy lodged crop yet.

Have done a few heavy crops with no issues and a very clean cut but they were generally standing crops iykwim.

Previous vicon was a bit prone to dragging / accumulating grass by the inside skid / gearbox.
