Hi, I would really appreciate some advice. I have been researching nutrition/dietician courses. I have always been passionate about health and nutrition and am kicking myself that it wasn't my chosen degree. I have been studying for years, 3 years full time for psychology degree and 3 years part time for ma in health education and promotion. I have found various courses but am unsure about accreditation and how it might affect future work opportunities. I am not in a position to study full time. I did find an old post discussing this but am hoping that something might have changed and possibly more courses have become available. I did courses through CNM, Irish Health Institute etc. Does anyone have experience with them. Any advice would be great. :)

There is a big difference between dietetics courses and "nutritionist" courses. The dietitian title is protected, like nurse or doctor, so only people who have done accredited, university level courses in dietetics can call themselves dietitians.

On the other hand, quite literally anyone can legally call themselves a nutritionist as it is not a protected term and there is no standard/accredited qualification. As a result, there are hundreds of unqualified quacks out there calling themselves nutritionists and giving advice that is at best unscientific, at worst dangerous.

I believe that it is unethical to undertake a healthcare role without appropriate, science-based qualifications. If you are serious about a career in this area, an accredited dietetics course is the best option. Anything else is a waste of time/money and unfair to patients.
