Nephew moved into 6 yr old 3 bed semi recently. Light not working in 2 of the bed rooms. Checked it out for him and find 178 volts L to N.. 220v L to E and
42 v N to E.. (at both light fittings) All other house lights ok.

These faulty lights seem to have been working previously as the lamp shade retainer show signs of heating from previous use.

Anything obvious here,,,,, before we call 'theman'

Broken Neutral, you need to call the man!

Sounds like a faulty neutral somewhere, maybe damaged wiring, or maybe somebody replaced a ceiling rose and didn't connect the neutrals correctly. With the power off at the fuseboard, open the ceiing roses and check for loose connections. Also check if neutrals present at the lights switches and if so make sure all connections are tight. If that doesn't sort it you need a sparks.

The neutrals may be looped from another ceiling rose, so the bad connection may not be in the rooms where the lights are not working. You may need to check them all.
