Small trailer question

I've had the same old home made trailer for years. Single Axle small ish. Has brake lights, indicators etc. Not used it a long time. I have to updated the plate to the current car, and it needs fresh tires. I don't carry much weight or anything. But is there anything else it needs to be legal. The Type approval only applies to trailers built after October 29th 2012. How do they know a trailer is built prior to that?

I might be wrong here but it's illegal to sell a trailer like that but not to use it?

Trailer license. A legal but often ignored requirement.

Actually you don't need a trailer license for small trailers, so not relevant to OP

Does the number plate have to match the towing vehicle?

Nope..... Not on most small car trailers it's not needed.

Once it was built before the Type Approval Laws came into effect it is perfectly legal to sell it. The Regs are a bit vague, but they only apply to trailers built after the Approval Dates.
After all, there is nothing to stop a person loaning his "older" trailer to somebody else....so why couldn't he sell it ?
