Hello people! I have two questions, and I really would like to have your opinion. I'm going to sign up to this photography course:

    http://www.cit.ie/course/ACCXXD7Y0

I would like to have your opinion about this school, the course, and the contents that they will teach to me, since I would like a course quite complete, what do you think?

The second question is this, I saw this at the end of the description tab:

    - AWARD
CIT: Single Module Certification, 5 ECTS credits at Level 7 on the National Framework of Qualifications.

Could anybody explain to me what this means, and if this is a really good certificate? Is the National Framework of Qualifications an important istitution? I'm a bit lost so I really would appreciate a bit of guidance in general.

Thank you so much for your help!!!! :):):)

    Leon

Do not know anything about the college or course.

What are your aims in doing this course? Do yowant a formal qualification for future employment or is to improve as an amateur?

If it's the formal qualification then an accredited course may be what you are seeking. If it's to improve as a hobby then you may well get more bang for you buck joining a local camera club and learning that way.

Looking at it, its no more than a course with a good camera club would give you at a fraction of the price.

I did one in Dublin last year and have learnt more from being in the club and seeing other peoples photos and how they went about it.

My cost for the course and a year in the club was 140 approx!

I'm sure there are people here who could recommend a club in Cork to you!

If your in Dublin there's a lot of good clubs.
I'm in Dublin camera club in Camden st. They are running another one in autumn. There's also people here from Palmerstown

In Lucan you have quite a lot of choice. There is Palmerstown, Celbridge and Dublin which are convenient. I used to live in Lucan and was in Dublin Camera Club. I think DCC have their annual exhibition on at the moment. Worth having a look at that to see the sort of work club members produce. Palmerstown have outings on each Wednesday during the summer. Go along to each club as a visitor. They are all good but different. Pick the one which suits you.

Its in the CHQ building in the IFSC. Some nice stuff...some guy called Adrian Sadlier had some photos in it too which are passable* :D

    * ---> gets my coat ;)

IHPHOTO is a member of Palmerstown. They meet in the parish hall.

DCC do a lot of Novice workshops which I personally find are very helpful along with their weekly club meetings, guest speakers and outings ( not been on one yet!)

In fairness, there's a completely different emphasis in an academic arts-oriented course than there would be in a camera club course. I wouldn't expect, in a arts course, to be taught the rudiments of how to operate a camera, or how to edit something in photoshop. There might be workshops or something for it as part of the course, but it's not the point of an academic course.

Thanks to you all for the answers. To be more precise, I would like a course that deeply explain to me the technic about photography, about light and shadow, about various aspect in photography. I would like to be able to know how to take a picture (technically speaking) in the best way at the end of a course, as well as for a painter to know the technique in the drawing (perspective, light and dark etc.), and if certified even better. I am based in Cork since I work here, so I was wondering what is the best thing to do. Thank you!

As an aside you might be interested in The Art of Photography by Bruce Barnbaum. Excellent book that explains a lot of these concepts

Maybe I read it wrong but the course also deals with the basic controls on a camera.

The first semester starts with a basic introduction to operating a digital camera and image processing. Presentations will be given by tutors on the various fields of photography including; landscape, portraiture, abstraction, still life, contemporary and historical image-makers. Students will make images in response outside of contact hours.

    Second semester is project based.

I would not rule out the Certified Course, as Daire points out it is a different beast to a Camera Club.

What I would suggest is looking into the local camera clubs and see how they suit you. Maybe join one if it offers the sort of things you seek. Then see how that goes. If you then want to keep going down the academic route the grounding you get in the club should make selecting a suitable course a lot better for your needs.

Just looking at catchlights website.....only one word describes some of the photos ..."wow"

I have to say DCC has given me a whole new impetus in taking photos and using LightRoom to edit them ( was always afraid of it :)). So much so that I'm taking a few days in the North this weekend to take some photos which I shall put onto my hard drive and never show to anyone

Ah you'll be surprised! There's a summer competition coming up and the winter league.. plenty of opportunity to get them out there! I found that the winter league in particular really helped me to learn, the feedback from judges was great. No point in entering old stuff - keep shooting and take the feedback on board. You'd be surprised how quickly you improve.
