Idiot question

Random question from a non-plumber -- I just had to take an undersink pedestal apart to retrieve a diamond earring for Mrs.Sparks, and discovered they'd used this stuff bent into an S-shape for the waste pipe under the sink in place of the formed PVC/metal pipes and trap I'd be used to seeing.

Is this normal practice these days? Or did the apprentice cut a corner and then hide it away by sealing the pedestal to the wall with silicone?

I'm not a plumber but that's exactly what was used on my bathroom basin about a year ago

I have seen it done, but not often. Maybe it's a new thing.

Btw if you got the ring it's working. :)

It's a flexible waste. I've always thought them too flimsy

I've seen them before- very light and easily clogged imo. I replaced one with a proper compact pedestal trap, although some modification of the exsiting pipe work was required (had to be extended a little, using a coupler and a small bit of pipe).

Quite common in other countries. Very much for the DIYer who cannot configure pipes and traps.
