Public Sector Query: Drop from Grade 1 to Grade 2

    Hi guys,

I am posting on behalf of a friend, she is currently 7 months into a two year temporary contract at Grade 1 level. She spends 2.5 hours a day commuting to a neighbouring city council with a salary band of €37k to €45k (after 6 years, if permanent).

A job (another temporary post) is after coming up in her home county council which would be a 20 minute commute each way. Salary band €25k to €41k.

    (a) Do anyone know if you get credit for the experience you have in a public sector organisation?

    (b) Regarding the salary scale, would you get in at a higher point on the salary scale of a Grade 2 post if you currently work at Grade 1 level. Can you enter at your current wage?

    (c) Is it crazy to be even considering a drop down to a Grade 2 post from a Grade 1 level? Even though there would be a considerable saving in commuting costs and time? And a possibility of keeping your current salary?

    (d) Are temporary contracts normally made permanent over time? Or is there ever a high chance of being let go?

    Thanks! :D
