What do you all think of the various shows going on around the country?
Whats your local show like? I'm in Wexford and I have to say I find them enjoyable. The Gorey show is not a bad way to spend an afternoon and the Bannow/Rathangan does be decent. Not as many sheep and cattle showing as when I was a young lad but I think its coming back a bit, especially the cattle with a few breeds like the Herefords trying to make a comeback down my way. The Carnew show is on this weekend and I'm looking forward to that although I know it will be like a field day as such, but will pass the time and its good to be social and my girls will enjoy it. I'm going to miss the Bannow show unfortunately but maybe next year.
What does everyone else think of the shows in their locality?

Hope to be going to the Bannow show tomorrow.

How they run a show of that size now and still have no problem getting parking and show stewards is beyond me and still a reasonable admission fee.
    Really good committee. Top marks.

I'm not in the horses like I used to be but I still like looking at the 3 year old all Ireland class.
Then there's a lot of machinery and trade stands too plus vintage cars and tractors.

There was a new breed class the last few years. The Irish moil class which is interesting too.

After Bannow another good show is the Iverk show and usually get to that too.

Enniscorthy show I'm not sure if it's still going or not? I haven't been in 12 years.
Dear admission and no parking and then nothing in the show finished me off that.

Yea Bannow does be decent alright. Raging I'm missing it this year.
Enniscorthy is poor, too many hawkers and gougers around, you cant feel comfortable, but thats enniscorthy for you.
I dont bother with Tinahealy, its gone too expensive for a family and the same ''traders'' down the bottom end every year. Time they cleared them out

I'd be a little bit different in my thinking.

It's the traders and variety that brings in the crowds.
Plus keeping the stand fees down.
It's when you start running stand holders out and put up the fees that finishes the show.

I tell you where I'm coming from.

The whole lot of us here and as a family used to go to enniscorthy show years ago and it used to be on a Thursday and everyone in the town would get the day off and go to the show and it was called the county show for fecks sake.

It was jammers and well supported.
Then they got greedy and put up the entrance and stand fees and were telling who could have a stand and who couldn't.
    What happened?
The machinery companies and stall holders just about abandoned it overnight.
The last time I was at it the field for stalls was empty and we were charged £10 entry fee.

Meanwhile you had a little show in the arse end of nowhere called the Bannow Rathangan show actively canvassing for as much stand holders as they could get with much reduced stand fee (a full field looks a hell of a lot better than an empty field) with a £5 entry fee and children free.
    What happened?
The crowd abandoned enniscorthy and went to Bannow and it's gone from strength to strength since and now gets tour buses from Wales even.
No crowd, no money, no show.
Loose the crowd, loose the show.

Well that was a good day at Bannow Rathangan show.

Plenty of goats, dogs, sheep, hens, ducks, donkeys, ponies, horses, cattle, farm produce, garden flowers, arts and crafts, vintage tractors, steam engine, car stands, tractor and machinery stands, fine gael stand, sinn fein stand, IFA stand, macra stand, country music and dancing stand, shopping arcades with nowhere to stand. All in all a good day out.

Weather cleared up nicely after and got a little sunburnt as always with the clear air beside the sea.

Massive crowd and reasonable admission fee of 8 euro and oap's 5 euro.

Well run show that never disappoints.

I'm making a habit of disagreeing with you wexfordsheep.;):D

The beauty of Bannow Rathangan is the fact that it is on a Thursday and people have to make the effort to be there. There's too many things on weekends now and when people give up a day off work to volunteer or attend the show it is valued and respected and enjoyed more. (Who doesn't like a day off work).
I hope it always stays on a Thursday.

I haven't heard the attendance figures, it was mentioned on south east radio this morning but I was at a meeting and missed the show. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was a record attendance.

The beauty also is the entry fee. It isn't going to break the bank for a family like the county show next to our own county coming up or the ploughing or tullamore. It's perfect the way it is.

I included the link to it's website as I forgot my camera  and there's pictures from other years on it and links to twitter to give people a flavour of what it is.

Here's also a link to south east radio's recording of the show yesterday from the bannow rathangan show.
