How much is lower mileage worth?

    Can it be calculated?

Two cars the exact same but one has 30,000 more miles.
How much cheaper should the one with more mileage be?

based on the details you have provided, i have determined that its worth €10k at least. If it was 31k miles it would have been worht €15K - provided the details you have furnished are correct and you are not leaving anything out, like make, model, year, engine, etc. things that some people wouldnt think important:D

What condition are both cars in? Service history? What year are they? Petrol or diesel? Irish people put too much emphasis on mileage and ignore other important factors.

I was trying to keep this as a generic discussion on what lower mileage is worth if both cars are the exact same but nobody seems to want to do that :)

In my case both are 2009 Ford Galaxys
    Both 2.0 Zetec, 138BHP, 2.0L
    Both black
    Both 6 speed

The only difference (apart from the mileage) seems to be one includes the roof bars.
One is in Dublin & one in Kerry (maybe that makes a difference?)

    One is €8,950 (160k miles) & the other is €9,950 (130k miles)

I agree that Irish people put too much emphasis on mileage (my 80 odd year old dad would be horrified I'm even considering them!)

from a quick search there seem to be a few other galaxys with less miles and the same price? http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/ford/galaxy/used-2009-ford-galaxy-2-0-tdci-gh-wicklow-fpa-8507074154276742058

just quickly picked that out from the list, what separates that from the 130k miles one you've linked

The one you've linked is a Ghia spec (leather seats & not sure what else).
It's also a private seller so they're generally cheaper seeing as there's no warranty.

The 2 I linked were basically the same car bar the mileage so was wondering how to calculate what mileage is worth (probably not possible - just curious)

Edit: that one you linked is sold anyway - ad is 125 days old

op one of them says the tax is E750 and the other E570. with the one with the claimed E570 also having 30k less miles, better resale value etc, Id probably take that one. you need to view them, check them out and see what you can get the dealers down too. I buy on value not price (within reason)

also if you are based in dublin, you can factor in one day gone and another whatever euro on getting down to kerry and back up here...

one example of where the motor tax actually increased, i.e. going from 710 for the 2L on cc to E750 on emissions...

    Presume that's a mistake as I checked by reg here & they're both €570

I am based in Dublin so will see that one first (& probably just go with it if it's ok)

I was really just looking for what lower mileage was worth in a monetary value but I don't think there's a formula.

    Thanks for the replies.

At 130k and 160k miles their appeal is tiny to the "I need to buy a new car as mine is at 99,999 miles and so it will blow up tomorrow brigade", tiny market for these cars even though they are perfectly fine for many more miles.

Service history and tyres is what to check. If they scrimp on tyres what else are they ignoring.

there are a good few 2008 up there for thousands cheaper. One thing I always ask myself when looking at cars, if I bought this today, what I could it sell it for tomorow...

Yes I use this as a benchmark for buying used cars, so far it hasn't let me down. If I see ditchfinders or non matching on the same axle it's a no go.

That one is a 2007 & the lower spec LX model
Roughly €2000 depreciation per year seems ok no?

sure its nothing compared to what some average new cars are losing... would you go for a 2007 or 2008 and save a few grand?

Yeap - not set on 2009 at all

    Would prefer the 2.0 / 138BHP option though over the 1.8 / 125BHP though.
Spec higher than entry level would be nice too

I'm just asking because usually people might want a certain year because a newer model came out or significantly reduced motor tax, just neither apply for this car in the years you are looking at. I believe the model was introduced in 2006 and replaced in 2015...

Yeap would have to be the newer model which came out at the end of 06.
Tax is a bit cheaper after 08 but not a deal breaker.

Considering this one. Saw it today.
    Least mileage of all.
    Dearer tax though.
    Thoughts?

My observation of used cars is that while lower mileage can make a car more desirable it has fairly little impact on overall value.

Saw two identical cars the other day. 1 year old. One had 18k and the other 33k and the price was identical.

cant see photos on my browser at the moment, the one thing I would check out is insurance, see if it is the same price or more expensive for say an 06 v an 09... its only a small consideration, but Id check it out...

    Good call
It's €80 dearer to insure the 06 vs the 09.

Tax also makes it €140 dearer.

Not a whole lot in the grand scheme of things.

EDIT: - no photos online as it was being valeted when I saw it - probably won't be now either as I've told him I'm buying it (mechanic going in tomorrow)

just bear in mind that if you are borrowing the cash that the interest on borrowing say the extra 4k between 5 and 9k, will probably wipe out the small motor tax and insurance savings...

Thanks but it's a cash buy (for the 06)
