What has appeared under my dogs nose?

This just appeared overnight on Wednesday last it wasn't there then on Thursday sometime during the day I noticed it. The second one is of it today. 6 days later. It doesn't seem to bother him. He's not licking it or pawing at it. He's eating normaly and his energy levels are the same.

I took him to the vets today and they weren't sure what it is. The vet shone a black light on it and ruled out a fungal infection. They decided that the best course of action was to take a biopsy on Thursday. I just hope it's not mast. Where it is the vet said they couldn't really remove it as there isn't enough of a margin. And said that would probably need chemo. But 1st we need to find out what it is. Leo's just over two :(

    What a lovely boy!

That is pretty big to come up so quickly, it makes me wonder if he's been bitten (insect) or got infected somehow?

I do hope he's ok. Let us know how you get on.

I thought so too but wouldn't the vet think of it? They never suggested it.

My mind is in a whirl at the moment.

Could it just be a simple thing?
Does he really need a biopsy?
How are they going to put a stitch in the biopsy site?
Why does it have to be in such an inoperable area?

Bailey had something similar on his chin.. first time it just swelled up and went down after in injection but it happened another 2 times and those times it burst and was all gross and infected, swabs taken and sent off etc etc... all within a few months. The third time they took him in and traced it back to a duct and biopsies showed chronic infection and that was the end of it.

It's the righ time of year for stings and foxtail/grass seed so try not to worry too much!

    Thats really odd looking
Even odder is that it 'appeared' overnight
    I would have thought a sting/bite too
So its there since last Thursday - thats 6 days - so has it changed/grown since then? If a bite/sting it should be going down by now. Is the surface/consistency changing? Any sign of infection/swelling/pus?

It's gotten a bit bigger and it's redder and looks knobblier. I thought I saw some weeping and crustiness yesterday. Hard to tell because of where it is.

If you zoom in on the second photo, there are some spots that look like pimple heads?

The 'pimple heads' were what I was wondering about, which was why I was wondering about infection/pus.

One of my dogs had been bitten/stung a couple of summers ago, and it looked like your dogs 'wound' .

Definitely worth going back to your vet.

Could it be a flea allergy.

Being where it is it could easily be a sting/bite - nosey dog investigating a buzzing etc.

Let us know how you get on at the vets. Just out of interest, why did the vet schedule you to come back in a week?

No. The vet wants me to come back this Thursday to do a biopsy on it.

A while back my boy had what looked like a big spot on his belly. It was weeping so I just cleaned it and it healed.

A month later a similar lump appeared so off to the vets with us. Vet said it wasn't an abscess as it wasn't filled with fluid. Told me to take him home, keep an eye and if it got any bigger bring him back for a biopsy, she mentioned lymph nodes and everything. I was distraught!

Lo and behold two days later it burst again and loads of fluid came out and healed up perfectly so thankfully no need for a biopsy.

I suppose the point of my reply is to say don't panic like me, I had two very sleepless nights worrying and it all worked out in the end!

I remembered this morning. He has this rubber kong ball outside. It's a bit old. I was playing with him with it a a day or so before that thing popped up. It was kind of flaking. I wonder if that could cause it?

I'm guessing the vet will either do a needle or punch biopsy, so you wouldn't need to worry about stitches.

Looking at the second photo again, it does look like there are pus filled pimples there.

Can you tell if it's got any bigger? Another photo to compare with the first ones? (I would also do a side on photo for your own reference, to see if there is any change in the "outward from lip" size)

Is there anything showing on the underside of his lip?

The vet said he might need a stitch from the biopsy. Today it's isn't as angry and it's looking slightly crusty where the pimple like things where. It's was very slightly puffy yesterday but not today.

    Nothing on the underside.

Bless him, what a good boy.

It's really not like anything I've seen before. I think there is defo a chance it could be some sort of infection? I'm just trying to remember all the growths I've seen on various animals over the years and none of them have had that appearance.

Really hope all goes well tomorrow. Please let us know.

Having just googled - I really suggest you don't - ask the vet about Canine Acne. Something to rule out?

Just googled it myself lol. Some of the photos look very similar to it. I must ask the vet.

Is canine acne fungal? The vet shone a black light on it and said it wasn't.

    This is a good link.

    https://www.vetary.com/dog/condition/acne

Not always bacterial - could be lots of things.

Funny when you mentioned the Kong - looks like plastic water/food bowls can also be an issue. Along with more mundane stuff like rubbing head in grass etc.

Hopefully that's what it is, but you're definitely right to get all checked out properly.

Good luck and let us know.

I used to use a plastic bowl for his water outside and it started to turn his nose white. As soon as I switch to a stainless steel one his nose went back to normal.

    Turning white in this photo

I'm afraid I can't help the OP except with good wishes, but I wanted to thank for for bringing up canine acne; it looks very like something Finn gets on his belly. I wasn't really worried about it because it doesn't weep or cause him issues, but it's good to have an idea what it could be.

Leo now at the vets. It's going to be a long day for him as he's there till 6:30 :(

I asked the nurse if they are going to give him antihistamines after the biopsy as a precaution and she said no, they've never done that.

Try not to worry too much! Easier said than done I know!

Yep Leo's home now an hour. He's got to wear the cone of shame for 10 days :(

I'll only use it though when I'm not around to supervise. He pooped :pac: He rolled around in the grass and ate some his food. Now he's resting on his favourite couch. :)

He had a little growth that's been on his hind leg for over a year removed too. It's was the size of a pea but it's been growing very slowly since it came up. The vet sent it off to be analysed too just in case.

    Now the wait begins…

    Ahhh, bless him.

All good though, best to get these things seen to as quickly as possible.

Did the vet do a punch or needle biopsy on his lip?

Really hoping all ok and nothing serious to worry about.

My dog had something literally pop up over night on her nose. It turned out to be a melanoma. However it didn't look anything like what's on your dogs nose. I hope you get good results xx

A punch. It needed a stitch

Oh and his bloods came back all clear. I forget what they looked at now but it was the more comprehensive bloods. Sooo possibly not mast cell?

Poor you - the waiting is just torture. Leo is oblivious. hes such a gorgeous dog. I remember when you posted about his nose going white - did you ever find out what it was/how it was that the plastic bowl could do that? A dye in the plastic?

Fingers crossed for a good result too. Let us know how it goes. Good luck!

Some dogs are just allergic to plastic and one of the symptoms is the nose going white.
