Hi does anybody out there have any idea why my 1.6 tdci 08 focus is making a cranking noise and like a knock when turning the steering wheel ? Only when taking off.

My mechanic told me its not cv joints or bushems he said hes not sure what it is.

if you mechanic is right re not bushes or cv, then your probably down to the rack or the column, but surely a decent mechanic would be able to diagnose??

Does it make the noise when taking off with the wheels straight?
Has he checked the engine mouts, shocktop mounts and drive shaft nuts?

Nope not when the wheels are straight it does it particulary when locked and den turn wheel to the opposite side and also say if reverse to the right fully then straighten up to go straight you can hear the knock... My mechanic said it almost sound like a spring like a vibration where as it sounds to be a knock

Your top bearing mount is buggered. It is seizing and will eventually break your spring. Ask me how I know. Simple test is, get a mate /wife / partner to sit in the car and turn the steering lock to lock while you hold onto the left or right spring. Simply hold the spring by holding two of the coils between your fingers and thumb while the wheel are being moved left and right. If the spring twangs while you are doing this , the top bearing mount is kaput or the spring itself is broke/sheared off at the top or bottom. If it is broke/snapped at the top it usually breaks up the top bearing mount.hth

It turned out to be both my front top shock mounts and a tie rod end also the links broke on the mounts so had to replace them. Cost me 235 all in all.
