As per heading, has anyone got virgin BB in the ennis area and is it any good, do they use their own cable or is it a piggyback on eir? What are speeds like? Is it good enough for IPTV.

Virgin never use eir, its their own HFC network.
Router depends, most likely a COMPAL Hub 3.0
Base package is 240Mb, and you actually get 240Mb.

friend is getting 226 down but iptv is hopeless, they are not techy but say programme stops and then repeats a segment. could it be mtu too high, I think default is 1500, I think I use 1492 or lower but cant remember, with eir.

Its far more likely that whatever "sources" their set top box is using have a crappy CDN/bad peering than the raw throughput of Virgins network being the problem.

That or they're using the wifi vs wired connection for the STB, most of their radios are disastrously bad.
