Phone socket wiring

Help needed. Had some work done in house recently and have only just plugged landline phone back in. Broadband has been plugged in all along and has no issues.
However phone will not work now, no dial tone. If you call house number it rings on calling phone even if no phone connected in house?
Broadband still works ok. Could there be one of the wires damaged from the building work but still have broadband working ok?
Is there a cheap fix for this? Can one of the other wires be used for the phone as I believe that ot only uses 2 of the wires anyway?

Your phone and broadband are provided on the same pair of wires, however broadband can work even if 1 wire is disconnected, however it will likely work at half speed and probably be intermittent. The phone line needs both wires connected.

Unless you can locate a break in the cable, contact your service provider. Usually a 100 euro charge from Open Eir if the cable is damaged by renovations to repair it.

Are you with Vodafone by any chance? If you are, it's quite likely your phone-line has been deactivated for voice service; hence why you no longer get a dial tone.

Vodafone is trying to switch their fibre and VDSL broadband customers over to VOIP for voice service but you can refuse or ask to be switched back to regular landline voice service if you've already been switched over.

To check, plug your phone into the phone socket on the back of your broadband modem and see if you get a dial tone there.
