Phone socket wiring

Help needed. Had some buikding work done in house recently and have only just plugged landline phone back in. Broadband has been plugged in all along and has no issues.
However phone will not work now, no dial tone. If you call house number it rings on calling phone even if no phone connected in house?
Broadband still works ok. Could there be one of the wires damaged from the building work but still have broadband working ok?
Is there a cheap fix for this? Can one of the other wires be used for the phone as I believe that it only uses 2 of the wires anyway?

First question to ask.... is your broadband provided through your phone line?
Second question - If so, is the phone that you use plugged into a socket on your modem/router, or a separate socket somewhere else in the house?

If your broadband and phone are provided through a phone line and your modem/router is functioning correctly by providing broadband, I would first try plugging a phone directly into a phone socket on the router.

If that works, then the problem is a phone line connection issue between the router and your house phone socket wiring. If building work has been undertaken I would suspect that the connection to the house phone socket has been broken somewhere.

If that is the case you should be able to maintain a phone connection directly at the router while you figure the rest out.

It is unlikely that there would be a phone only fault on an incoming combined broadband and phone connection provided through a phone line. The ringing tone heard on calling in, is generated by the telephone exchange. That is where the ring signal is sent out on your line to your device. It is a the last stop before your house, so the problem is more than likely internal to your house.
