New car help and MPG recommendations

    Hi Folks

    I need your helping hands.

Just passed my driving test so wanna get something a bit beefier than a 1L Polo.

What I'm mainly hoping to get is an SUV kinda style with a good bit of power. My camping and fishing brings me up some steep hills and demands a lot of space for all the gear. My Polo nearly died last week trying get up a road in Roscommon :)

Now the thing is I'm wary about the MPG as myself and the wife might be moving out of Dublin next year with the idea of commuting in for work so I wanna keep the costs down on fuel. Ive had a look at some MPG calculators and some along the lines of 25mpg would be too much.

Am I asking the impossible here? Does a car/jeep that meets my needs even exist?

Also insurance is not too much of a worry as Ive ran a few big vehicles by my current company and the quote is not too bad. Tax is not too much of an issue either.

Any help is gratefully appreciated lads.

    Cheers,

Are you hoping to buy new? Would you consider an estate as opposed to a jeep?

Might not be your cup of tea but I'd recommend having a look at Suzuki Jimnys - have one and it is as tough as nails (check out some videos on you tube of people using them offroad).

Small engine (1.3) so cheap to tax and they are very light on petrol (not far off of 40mpg) on 2 wheels drive and can swop over to full 4x4 mode for the tougher driving

They might look a bit girly but they're good craic

Edit : Just seen your bit about needing space, might be a bit small so but still worth a look (back seats fold totally down so it's van-like. (small van like)

No will be buying used sorry should of mentioned that. Yeh I would consider an estate. The only reason Im looking at jeep/suv type is some of the roads down to the beaches and lakes can be quite bumpy. Theres one or two I wouldnt even try in my current Polo.

Loving the RAV-4 mate. Good reputation for MPG and reliability. I think I'm gonna go with one and sure if we move out of Dublin next year and its costing me too much Ill get rid and get something more efficient.

The loan is withdrawn, bring it on!

you say you have just passed your test! insurance can vary massively from car to car, Id be doing research on that first, before going gun ho, buying and then having to sell. I know of several people who have had to do this...
