Flat rate expenses question

    Hello,

I'm helping a friend work out her taxes. According to the online thing she only had flat rate expenses up to 2013, then they disappeared. In 2014 she started getting a new single parent allowance and the flat rate one disappeared. Is it the case that you can't get flate rate expenses if you're on single parents allowance? She's a teacher, on 50k if that makes a difference.

Also, I'm trying to work out how all this works. I read online that for the €583 allowance I think she's entitled to, she'll pay about €230 less tax, so for the three years I've claimed for her she could get €690 back. I thought the €583 was tax free so should get €583x3 back. Does anyone know for sure?

It's not a tax free allowance, it's tax relief at her marginal rate. If she qualifies for the flat rate expenses for a particular trade or profession, she should claim it for all years applicable subject to the 4 year rule.
