Carers Leave / Benefit

Question for anyone who may know. My wife has recently had to give up work to care for our children, one of which is in receipt of the domicillary care allowance.

From reading online, there seems to be Carers Leave, and Carers Benefit. I know they don't both apply at the same time, but can Carers leave be taken, and then, if required, Carers Benefit?

Assuming that she has all the relevant PRSI contributions. I don't see anything on Carers allowance saying one precludes the other.

    Carers Leave

    Carers Benefit

You are getting a bit mixed up.

Carers Leave is a type of leave you take from work, similar to annual leave, parental leave, maternity leave, etc.

It is nothing to do with PRSI etc, it is to do with length of time worked. The aim is to confer a number of rights, such as your employer must hold your job for you.

Separately to this there is Carers Allowance or Carers Benefit. One is means tested. The other isn't. Typically when someone takes a period of carers leave they will naturally claim Carers Benefit or Carers Allowance in order to keep an income coming in. You don't have to do this however. You can take the leave without being eligible for either payment.

Sorry, I see that now. It seems I should have been asking about Carers benefit vs Carers Allowance. These terms are a bit confusing!

Update - Rang through and spoke to the office, they advised should be going for Carers benefit initially, and then, if required, carers allowance after two years.
