Housing Assistance

Mid thirties, single, living at home on the farm (which is basically wound up now), probably going to start as a clerical officer in the civil service soon and looking to get my own place. What are my options?

Change of circumstance over the past couple of years and I'm a bit worried on how or what I can afford to do.

Clerical officer wages start off quite low and I don't have an awful lot of savings. I have very little idea of what assistance is available but it's become very obvious that I might need some. :o

I am aware the county councils offer some sort of mortgage if you have been refused by the banks but I believe I'd need to be in the same employment for 2+ years?

There is the housing list that I know very little about or if I'd even qualify.

There's always renting. I had a few looks on Daft and there are very slim pickings within a reasonable distance (can remember looking a few years ago and there were loads of places!). I'd be looking for something fairly basic on CO wages.
I'd definitely prefer to aim towards owning my own place if at all possible.

    Any help or advice?

You won't get housing assistance in full time employment.

Take the job, rent a room, and save up. You will get there in time.

I believe there IS some assistance for people in full time employment. The Council mortgages would be one example. Hopefully there are more.

Appreciate you trying to help though.

You could count the number of council mortgages nationwide on one hand. Don't confuse an afternoon if googling with real experience and good advice.

There is sweet f'all for you bar getting out of the house, taking the job, and working hard to kick on with your life.

No worries. It's important you don't fool yourself or believe there are things out there that there is not. Get off your arse, get out there, roll up the sleeves and best of luck. You're still a young man so don't lose the faith.

LOL, thanks. Thankfully advice comes in all forms and I have received some very welcome, fairly comprehensive advice from elsewhere. But that's not to say you didn't try your best, which is appreciated.
