remember a period about roughly the late 90's when lower case seemed to be all the rage on ads and television graphics?, just something i noticed at the time.

    [ understatement ] & [ soft selling ]

Think it was Mazda who did it best many years ago for their TV ads, putting small words (in big brackets).

trying to think of a witty reply i googled lowercase and learned that the small letters were kept in the lower case and the large letters were kept in the upper case.
every day is a school day.

Still is. Look at the ITV and upcoming Sky Sports logos. Looks like they were designed by children.

Most likely came from the 'e' and 'i' malarkey from technology names. E.g. eMachines, iPod. Then everyone jumped on it, like easyJet.
