My washing machine stops and doent drain when i put a towel in it.

Should that be acceptable merchantable quality....

I know it states 7kg but this seems unfair.

If you put in one big item, the drum may not be able to balance itself. It then won't go to full spin speed as it would be damaged.
Ironically, the solution is to put more clothes in. A number of realtively small items, eg hand towels.

Is this merchantable quality not being able to wash a bath towel? is it fit for purpose?

    How old is the machine?
Seems odd, the machine should be able to complete a programe with nothing in it, strange that it stops mid wash. Are you certain that the programme has completed?

But it doesn't have "nothing" in it, it has a bath towel in it, and as noted above, it will be unable to distribute that one item in such a way as to be able to spin without causing excessive vibration, so aborts the programme. Most if not all modern machines will do the same and there will probably be specific information in the user manual to that effect, there is in mine, a Bosch.

The solution is easy, wash two or more towels, not one.

    Yes it is.

You are underloading the machine: Underloading

It's not a good idea to under load your machine either, as it can affect the efficiency of the spin. This upsets the machine's balance protection system. This means your washing may not spin at the speed you want or even not spin at all.

If it doesn't stop mid wash with a decent load, or when run empty, it is working perfectly.

We have a Bosch as well, only a few years old, and I have often just washed my work jeans without an issue.
Maybe newer ones are more sensitive, so manufacturers instructions would need to be checked.

A pair of jeans, with two legs will generally distribute itself around the drum. A wet bath towel is extremely heavy and inclined to stay in one lump, thus imbalancing the centrefuge of the machine. The machine will make several attempts to distribute the clothes before abandoning the cycle.
Its as said above, a safety system, nothing wrong with the machine.
