The 105bhp one is the lowest power diesel. The six speed box should in theory increase economy at higher speeds.

Of those two the highline one is a much higher spec even if a year older. There is also a 2 litre 6 speed available which may be a better option if you regularly travel with the car fully loaded.

The first one is a UK import, Bluemotion technology is VW talk for more fuel efficient model with the likes of stop/start, slightly better aerodynamics, 6 speed gearbox, etc all designed to make the car slightly more fuel efficient. It was also a trim level in the UK that was very similar to a baseline model. The poor spec wouldn't appeal to me to be honest.

The second one is an Irish Highline model which has more toys than the UK model. It also too has bluemotion technology in that it has start/stop, regenerative brakes, etc. Still would have the 5 speed gearbox though. 105bhp is the brake horse power of the 1.6 TDi engine in both cars. Personally if you can find a 2.0 TDi Highline that would be superior to the 1.6 which is sluggish in a car that size.

If i can live with Sluggish surely i'm saving in fuel costs??.
Is a 2.0L more economical - could it be?

We cover a lot of mileage every day and its a big factor/ i've been looking at Electric cars too but I cant bring myself to buy a second hand EV.

Not really, more sluggish engine means it's under more strain to pull the body around which means it needs to use more fuel. A bigger engine will have less issue with strain so will be more efficient. If you're doing frequent motorway driving or have the car loaded then the 2.0 litre is much better option, this being Ireland though there are far more choice in 1.6 litre than 2.0 litre.

if cost of fuel is of utmost concern, why not get electric? its way cheaper than diesel... youd get a second generation leaf for your budget

Generally in a car the size of a PAssat the 2.0 won't be heavier on fuel overall and if anything could be more economical.

A far more pleasant drive too.

1.6 is a waste of time in a car that size. You will feel it more on country road rather than motorway as you will be over taking etc. I had a 1.6 in a Citroen and it just didn't have the acceleration. On the motorway it was fine, once you got the revs up it cruised away.

Also, if you have just two kids, you will get a better wagon for the money rather than a passat.

First question I'd be asking with any 2nd hand VW is about the software 'fix'. If it has had it done I would walk away.

That's a bit knee jerk. You'd be walking away from over 50% of the market.

To be fair, if the car drives ok, it is ok.

Until its not, and there is more and more evidence of people having issues post fix. I wouldn't risk it myself.

Well any car is ok until it's not.

I don't think that a post AE189 updated car is really much more of a risk than a pre updated car tbh.

In my own opinion I wouldn't let a car having had the repair done put me off buying it if it passed all the other standard used car checks.

Yes very true. I have a colleague who has an A6 with the patch applied and he tells me it improved his car - more economical, so it appears to be a bit of a hit and miss on the VAG patch
