Painting old capping stones

    Hi all
The latest project is the capping stones on top of my external garden wall and the two pillars at the driveway opening. They haven't been painted in some time and the paint was badly flaking. I went at them with a scraper and a wire brush attached to a cordless drill and got a good bit of the loose paint off, but what I'm left with is some parts that are down to the bare stone and other parts that still have the original paint still on it, so its an uneven surface. Im just worried when i paint over it, these imperfections will show through. So I'm wondering, should I:
1, buy a paint stripper and get the rest of the paint off?
2, sand the cappings with a belt Sander and get the cappings smooth and then paint over that?
What paint do you guys recommend? Was thinking of dulux weather shield?
    Thanks for all the help!

Hi I'd put on a coat of oil undercoat diluted with white spirit, to soak into the concrete. Then put on a full coat of oil undercoat. Then put on white or whatever weathershield.

a related query on capping stones

the external garden boundary walls at my house do not have capping stones...the walls were originally built with last block laid "flat on block" so they look awful

Any recommendation on who I could get to fit capping stones to my walls (Limerick area), covering around 40m in length
