Looking at importing a new UK car not sold spec wise here in Ireland. Car is circa £23K but is not sold in that spec here.

Firstly, has anyone ever done this not regreted it from a cost perspective?

Is there anyway of reducing the cost ? I recall my motorbike was not charged UK Vat and with VRT and VAT here was still cheaper than buying the bike here (that too has a spec not sold here!)

Lastly, will a UK dealer take a 2007 S40 1.6D as part trade (i really want rid of it and because of chaepe tax here it will be pure hassle)

That's going to cost you a lot on terms of vrt and then vat on the total. Can you not find over 7/8 months old with very low mileage and avoid the vat at least?

Have you tried contacting a Mazda dealer in Ireland and seeing if they would order that model in specially for you, might work out cheaper than doing it yourself.

I'd imagine Joe Duffy wouldn't be bothered but I will inquire.

I got my bike in vat free before so need to check whether that is possible here. A colleague of mine knows a number of people who buy new and bring from the North to the South so they somehow must be vat free from the North. Will inquire there too and report back.

The car has to be at least 6 months old (since registration) and must have the equivalent of 6,000 klms on the clock to be VAT free. You will still pay a hefty enough VRT bill though

Jesus weeps, a 2007 1.6 S40 should not be hard to sell here because of the motor tax, it's not high. A Northern dealer might take it if they have a dealer down here in the south who will buy it from them. The Northern dealer will give you the Northern trade value for it though which I would imagine is near to feck all.

If you have to pay VAT here, you can have the UK VAT refunded, afaik.

Do you know how exactly this works? Do you have to pay it on purchase then reclaim from HMRC once you have brought it in?

I think the one in the North is a GT Sport which has a body kit and probably a few extra bits but probably wouldn't be a huge amount in it.

Reliably told by a Nissan dealer that one of these was very slow to sell on trade in. Know a garage with a v nice 2007 BMW 320D took weeks to sell for tax reasons last year. In the end one buyer is all that turned up.
    1.6D S40 has bad rep.

    Current options are:
    1. go with a 6yr old dealer approved BMW with 12 month warranty and €3k VRT or €16000 overall. Not sure they would take a Southern reg car as trade in, but would take 1500 for it.

    2. Trade in S40 against a new Mazda CX3 GT down here. Would be hoping for at least €3k trade in making €24000 the balance to make up.

    3. Wait for a government scrapage scheme that may never materialise.

Meanwhile, have to get that error off the car.............

Sounds more like the Nissan dealer was talking down the value of your trade-in. Pre 2008 1.6 diesel is still relatively cheap to tax compared to a similar BMW 320d or any 2.0 diesel which is over €700 to tax. Anyway whatever the value of the S40 down here, it's going to be less up North as the market is different up there. And if the S40 has a bad rep a Northern dealer may not want it if they cannot shift it to a dealer down here. Unless the car is in dire need of repair then getting at least 3k for privately isn't a huge ask imo.

Have speced a CX3 here but will be looking to trade in the S40 against it. Lets say a price is offered and that brings the balance down to Y, Y can be financed or paid with cash, if paid with cash how much discount should I seek? 6%?

So assuming you get €3k for your Volvo, which is likely to be a good bit more than its trade value, you would expect a further discount? Not how it works I'm afraid.
No such thing as a "cash discount" as dealers much prefer buyers to finance the car through them. Now, a straight deal involving no trade-in is different and you'd be well entitled to ask for 6% off.

Cheers aerofoiled. That's what I thought, might just run the S40 into the ground for next 18 months and then go for a straight deal as would save 18 months depreciation on the new model.
A lot of S40 on Done Deal are circa 3K, effectively I would be only getting 1500 over a straight deal which is not what the car is worth.
