When I was playing today, my ball went through the green. When I went to check, my ball had rolled down a dip and a was firmly fixed up against the base of a low wall. With the green behind me I had nowhere to hit as either side of me was shrubs and nettles. It's not my home course so I asked the lads I was playing with what was the ruling regarding relief. They said one club length from the wall no nearer the hole for a 1 shot penalty. I didn't want to cause a scene because I was a guest and accepted their call. Was this correct? I was under the impression, if it was a man made object I.e.the wall, I could have the same relief without penalty

No, that's only for temporary structures.

Did you look at the scorecard? It should say how those sort of things are treated. It would be fairly normal for such walls to be treated as integral parts of the course.

If you are taking an unplayable you get two club lengths relief for the one shot penalty.

But your relief should not be nearer to the hole, so only option was probably to go back and retake shot under penalty

I spoke with the pro. He said because there was a hazard behind the wall and where lines were drawn I would be required to play ball from where it stopped
