At the sea side near youghal last weekend I saw the biggest bird I have seen to date.

It was in the shallow waters. Black body with a white belly and a white tail or a stripe of white on the tail. Wing span must have been 1-2 m or greater. Flew up and down the shore line and caught a reasonable sized fish.

    No photo unfortunately.
Any ideas as to what it might have been?

Maybe take a look at a picture of an Osprey, but my money would be on a White-faced Sea Eagle alright - a lovely sighting!

The colors suggest a white-tailed sea eagle, (not white-faced))).
These eagles were reintroduced to Ireland in the last 10 years so it's possible this is what you saw.
    Did it have any tags?

Probably a product of the Killarney Sea Eagle project.

That's a good news story to see that they are surviving

Report the sighting on goldeneagle.ie, if it was tagged they'll be able to confirm it.

A female sea Eagle that had just laid eggs was poisoned in Killarney this year. Glengarrif pair failed as well. Two active pairs in Clare with four chinks.
