Road Trip South of France

Thinking to do a road trip across South of France this summer. Would be looking at flying into Carcassonne and heading over towards Nice. Haven't decided if going to be end of July or mid to end of August. Does anyone know if the roads get really congested with tourists and if mid to end of August would be a little quieter than July?

Also does anyone know if you can do day excursions on the Canal du Midi and what would be the best stretch to do it on if you only have one day?

    Fantastic.
Did it in 2006. Flew to Nice then out of Carcasonne.
The Perpignan area is great, Pyrenees, Collioure, Bezier. Well worth spending extra time here.

Both dates will be busy, but August is generally busier due to the Parisiennes arriving in their millions. I think they managed a 100km tailback at Lyon in recent years. Earlier the better.
    Hopefully you'll miss the Mistrale!

Oh great to know that as I would have been inclined to think the busier time would have been the other way round - in July. Better start looking at flights soon.

ViaMichelin is good for maps and route planning. Scenic roads are marked with a green border.

Just back from Languedoc. The traffic in the last week as the French headed off on holidays was mental. It will be the same in mid-August as they all head back at the end of the school holidays.
