Where do I begin? Consultant, builder, product installers?

I have a holiday home which I would like to make self sufficient or near it in terms of electricity, heating.
    Where do I begin?

The house is a 3 bed thatch cottage restored in the past 10 years and is rented throughout the year as a holiday home.

What's your motivation for being eco-friendly?

I believe it's the only way forward, fossil fuels will not be viable in 20 years.
    Save money long term.
    Rent as eco-friendly.
    Help save the environment.

This is firstly for a small holiday home which is mostly empty for the winter months. We run an oil fueled heat to keep the house damp free during these winter months. This is a waste, a small solar or wind supply should be capable of keeping the house from damp, I believe.

If the conversion was successful I would then possibly apply same to my own home.

    I would, in order:
    1. Change all light bulbs to LEDs
    2. Insulate the attic
    3. Leave some cheap second hand bikes there to remove the need to drive when you (or visitors) are down there
    4. Install double / tripple glazed windows
    5. Install Solar PV with a hot water diversion unit
    6. Change the car you use to drive there to electric
    7. Insulate the rest of the house as much as possible (wrapping, cavity insulation, etc.)
    8. Put in an Air Source heat pump and remove oil / gas heating

I've run the numbers on my own work through this list here if you're interested, though the paybacks depend on usage, so you'd need to run them yourself based on the usage given it's a holiday home you're working on. Good luck with the project! Interested to hear what you do and how it goes.
