Anyone know what it means if the

    "unit ok" light is on

but the "line ok" light does not come on when a Cheetah fencer is plugged in?

its an m60 ....working grand for the last 6 months...power is definitely going into it.....7 galvanised earth bars spaced at least 3 metres apart in damp ground connected with 2.5mm insulated wire separated from the leadout wire (also 2.5mm insulated) to avoid any possible induction effects...earth connection still fine, leadout wire still fine...in a bit of a fix here, won't be long till stock mess up a load of paddocks on me.

no output from the thing? anyone have one and know what the "line ok" light not working means?

There's probably something touching the fence .

    Have you a fence tester.

Ill have a check but I don't think its that....though obviously not sure.....there doesn't seem to be any output at the fence unit

I do have a fence tester (though not a fault finder) its one of the older cheetah ones with the series of lights on it....it registered no power whatsoever out at the fence...

If there's no shock it must be hitting either barbed wire/sheep wire or a gate. Normally briars etc will reduce the shock but steel will eliminate the shock altogether. Take the shock wire off the fencer and see if there's a shock in it then you'll know if its working

Put your hand on the earth bar and see if you can feel some tingle.

If you can, at least your fencer is working.
It's just that the polarities have switched around and there's a bigger earth on the fence wire than the earths you have already.

Don't worry about getting a shock. You'll only have your hand on the earth bar for a second and the most of the current will go into the ground anyway and not into you.
It's still the easiest and quickest ways of testing it.

Edit: Whelan's post above is another excellent idea.

I'm no expert but when mine was working it clicked on and off too...the problem is its permanently off now.

Thanks everyone....I swapped in a neighbours unit that I have until tomorrow morning and its working grand

Took my one home and hooked it up with another couple of earth bars to about 10 foot of unearthed fence wire....no output..nothing coming out of it....so its some problem with the unit

had a look at the instruction leaflet and plenty about correct earthing system but nothing about what the bloody lights mean

"unit ok" light on...(but not turning on and off as it sends a pulse)

    "line ok" light not on

if you ask me they should mention somewhere in the leaflet what the lights mean...or are they supposed to be diagnostic?

I sold the "stop" brand of fencers for Alfa for years and if they were plugged into an outlet with other items which switched on/off the units often failed. Was down to them units not being able to cope with dips in supply power at all.

Particularly a problem if used around a dairy where cooler and machine would be coming on and poor esb supply would dip when the heavy draw items were switched on. Less of an issue these days as most farms have their own transformer supply.
