RTE has a documentary about elderly people driving. One of the stars of the show is John who is 101 years old and drives a Nissan Leaf!

He says he really likes it, that it is easy to drive and likes that he is doing his part for the environment :D

You can see it on RTE Player here:

John is at about 17 minutes in.

However overall the show is a little sad. It drives home for me why self driving cars can't come soon enough to allow elderly and people with other disabilities greater freedom.

Hope I'm that progressive when I'm (somewhere close-ish) to his age. He puts conservatives 30 or 40 years younger than him to shame.

As regards fully fledged automation, I'm also looking forward to that. To me, driving is just a utility - and I'd love to see it destroy the insurance industry!!

It's the younger folk though who cause most of the accidents, most elderly people are usually a lot more cautious.

We need to give consideration to all drivers that use the road, we ourselves will also be old some day and while cars maybe much more advanced I'm sure they still won't cope with every situation.

They should do another documentary about young drivers too while they're at it.

I thought the saddest story in that show was the first guy. Who hates driving but only does so in order to visit his wife in a nursing home.

Unfortunately he was also the one who was least fit to be on the road in my opinion. He openly admitted that he didn't see oncoming cars until they were right on him.

John was amazing though. Out walking, living independently and even hitting the exercise bike in front of the telly.

Seems like an immensely likeable man and one you'd love to meet in person and talk about his life.

Frankly he seems to put most 30 to 40 year olds to shame!

He is actually a neighbour of my friends family. He said he is just as great in real life. He use to cycle up and down a hill every day to get to town until a year or two ago. Still cycles and walks a few km every day. Just can't make the hill anymore.

Frankly he is an inspiration to get off my lazy ass and get out more. If only we could all be that fit, healthy and positive at any age, never mind 101!
