Looking for a new petrol estate...

As above, having a hard time finding an estate that has a decent petrol engine. Not really interested in these new small displacement, forced induction engines either.

Would rather stay away from Fords and Volvos as well. Budget would be €30k max.

Anyone fire some ideas at me? Thanks.

    Auris Hybrid Tourer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I think Toyota dropped the Auris Tourer, haven't seen a new one around in yonks.

Little or no normally aspired petrol estates available these days. Small capacity turbo units are all the craze now.

It's still there. I was sitting in one at the factory yesterday unless they just aren't importing them here

Probably, very slow uptake on them here.

Audi do the A4 Avant in both 1.4 and 2.0 petrol.

Both are turbo charged though. I think the OP is going to have to park that restriction if they want a petrol estate in this country.

I'd read it that he only objected to small turbo engines, but you're right, hard to get any decent engine without a turbo nowadays.

F31 340i. Turbo charged but 3.0 six cylinder and the F31 is a lovely car to drive. Looks nice too.
    Or the 330i with 2.0 4 cylinder.
    Not cheap tho.

They're not bad looking no, but would you want to live with one? The one misfortune I know that bought one spent more time in the Renault dealers courtesy car than he did in the Megane before he gave in and traded it.

    What year car was this?

Mazda 6 is available as 2.0 na engine and it's cheaper than the diesel too, you should get one for 30k if you can talk the dealer into ordering one.

Not sure but I'd guess Toyota still do a petrol Avensis na engine too, but they might not import it here

I know someone who has a new Megane and they've had no trouble with it.

Doubt every one of them is a lemon, but they have a well deserved reputation for fragility.

Not since 2009 when the previous model was launched

If you find one for 30k let me know, priced one up online and it ran just over 50k

Both the Mazda 6 and Toyota Avensis don't come with a petrol engine for their estate models.

Open also to turbocharged engines but no smaller than 1.8l? Could stretch budget to €33k.

    Cheers for all the ideas.

Must have been a long time ago. Renault have changed and improved there quality and build massively since then.
Renault and Nissan are now the same cars. They use the same platforms and engines just have different skins.

I think the new Megane in any shape is very classy and there is a very comprehensive brochure for it too unlike some makes these days which either don,t have brochures or if they do they are very thin.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

He traded it about 4 months ago! From what I've heard (I've family in the trade) Renaults are still beset by electrical woes and the diesels are troublesome. I'd rather a thin brochure and a reliable car!

Yet people don't seem to have the same problems or stories about modern day Nissans despite using the same components for the most part. Lots of man down the pub and bar stool expert stories out there if you want to believe them.

I've said it before but asking people about Renault is a great litmus test for gauging their current knowledge of cars.

Great to hear Renaults are now enjoying jap levels of reliability, will have to get rid of the Audi and get myself a Laguna, if the experts say it, it must be true. All those mechanics haven't a clue what they're on about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Your information like your views on Renault in general seems a bit outdated as the Laguna is no longer sold in right hand drive. Also Audi are certainly no benchmark in terms of reliability, a modern day Renault would be no more unreliable than a modern day Audi but I guess everything any mechanic says is gospel.

You've very limited opitions if any at all unless you head over across the pond.

From a quick look on Autotrader UK at some second hand cars a few options are the :

Golf, Leon or Octavia in 1.8 or 2.0 TSi

    A4 Avant 1.8 or 2.0 TFSi

    320i or 520i

Mazda 6 2.0 n/a (the closest to your criteria)

    Avensis 1.8 Valvematic CVT

    Insignia 2.0 Turbo (rare)

Mondeo or Focus in 2.0 Ecoboost which I know you wish to avoid but there are a good few of them for sale in the UK.

Prices fluctuate on many of them but for something as new as possible I doubt you'll have much change if any left from €33k after vrt and the likes.

Two chefs cooking from same ingredients may end up with two different dishes... Small details, such as precision when putting the seals DO matter...

You can't be crowing about reliability if you've an Audi. They're improving again, but they were coming near bottom (if not last) in many reliability surveys in far more recent times than Renault.

I have Leon St fr almost 2 years, 64k km. Driven hard. Not so much as a rattle. Very practical yet great handling.Standard fr spec very high. It's diesel, but the vag 1.4 tsi 150 gets great reviews in UK ( honest John forum etc). Paint bit softer than I'd like, but that seems common complaint nowadays.
    Paintwork aside, great car.

The 150 tsi is the one to get. As a bonus you get ACT - active cylinder deactivation to reduce pumping loses.
