Help me identify a loose lead

Hi guys, am not a mechanic, more a pc type guy, but am trying to branch out and do more due to too much idle time during summer and a lack of funds lol.
I have an 02 vectra B 1.8 lt which was causing problems. Stalling randomly, bad fuel economy and then one day it just would not start.
its sat idle for a couple of months but i have now got a battery charger and obd2 reader and set to work.
From the code p0170 and goggling I am fairly certain the MAS needs to be cleaned or replaced but while under the bonnet I spotted a stray lead.

It runs from behind the engine block at the top and hangs down into some space between engine and radiator.

I took some pics as I doubt my description is helpful so I just need to know if this wire should be attached to something or it is like a spare for some feature the car did not have installed.

have look here re the spare cable

    http://workshop-manuals.com/vauxhall/vectra-b/general_vehicle_information/description_and_operation/technical_abc/

p0170 can be number of things - unplug the MAS and see if car runs better - if not look at he other reasons - vacuum leak is common.

Use your scanner to look at live data on cranking. Ensure all statuses and parameters required for starting are correct.

Thanks Autochange, will have to give that a try. Now I just gotta google how to do that lol. This is a learning experience for me, but I have always believed everyone should know at least the basics of car maintenance/repair.

I think that unplugged lead is a red herring and as you say possibly part of the loom for a component that you don't have fitted, maybe aircon? It's a 2 pin connector so it's most likely for a simple pressure switch or light bulb. The P0170 is related to fuel trim, i.e the degree to which the car computer adjusts the fuel injector opening time to compensate for perceived rich or lean running conditions. Could be another red herring for a no start situation, unless you had a massive vacuum leak or similar. I would suggest some basic ignition and fuel supply checks to start with...

after cleaning the MAF I did a more careful check of the pipes connected to it, a ring (jubliee clip i call it) was broken were the pipe connected to top of engine so i am replacing that today. Also checked the scalliti (spelling?) valve, the little thing that looks like a bike valve and when pressed emits a spray of fuel. Turns out that there is no fuel in it, so no pressure. Gotta check the relays and fuses and possibly the fuel pump. If its a break in a lead somewhere I would never find it so fingers crossed for fuses.

Its and interesting, kinda fun, but also frustrating way to spend time. I seem to hit a block on a daily basis from lack of tools/knowledge but am getting there. I must invest in a multimeter at some point, seems it would be useful.

    yyeeahhhh.

so i checked the fuses/relays and all ok. double checked the valve and pertol came out this time so am guessing i did not do it properly first time around. bought the clip and fitted it, tried to start and it just turned over a few times without catching. was about to give it up but tried one more time and it started.

purring like a kitten now :)

at idle its a little lower than i thought 750ish but sounds great.

now i just gotta get it taxed and insured and am back on the road. been a long 4 months.

thanks for all the help guys, am over the moon to have sorted this without the need for a garage/tow truck etc
