I was out cycling this afternoon and this little fella burst out of the ditch looking for help, seems ok, he's strong and full of character but his wing seems a bit damaged. I couldn't leave him behind, he was just crawling around. I've no idea what kind of bird he is. I put him in my back pocket and brought him home, fed him some cat food and lots of water as per the vets advice. He's sleeping away happily now. I've no idea what to do with him now. any ideas? what kind of bird is he?

Song Thrush - I know how you feel but you probably should have popped him back into the hedge where you found him.

Indeed Songthrush and it should have been left where it was.

Cat food is no good long term - which is kind of where you're headed now - they need specialised vitamins and proteins. Caterpillars, insects etc need to be included. They also need feeding once an hour at a minimum at this stage.

I couldn't have left him in good conscience at the time tho I acknowledge now it probably wouldv been the right thing to do. Stuck with him now so I guess I'm looking at nursing him back to health and maybe releasing him where I found him when he seems better?

The vet mentioned there's a sanctuary in Kildare i might drive him out there tomorrow

It's not a matter of releasing it when it seems better. It will need to be fed for a couple of weeks at least, as the parents will no longer be able to do so. It should also be transferred to a aviary for a week or two prior to release, as it will need to exercise, strengthen flying and get used to exposed weather.
