I have two overflow pipes coming from attic to outside one over small bathroom window and other over main bedroom window. The one over the main bedroom is continuously dripping more noticeable early morning than anyone time ...haven't noticed it as much during the day ... obviously connected to water tank I would imagine in attic. How can you tell what is causing it does anyone know and what is the remedy.
    Thks
    Paddy

    most likely a ballcock problem

One of those overflows is coming from the cold water storage tank - for all cold taps except kitchen sink one. It also tops up immersion etc.

The other overflow will be coming from a central heating storage tank for expansion.

You will have to climb into the attic and look at both tanks to see which one has a problem.Look into the tank - there will be a ball cock at one end and an overflow pipe at the other end. If the level of water is below the overflow pipe level then it is okay.

The one with the problem - you will see that the water level is up to the overflow pipe level.

The ballcock is usually the problem. A quick fix can be to bend the ball cock arm (if metal) slightly to get the ballcock lower down in the tank.

The correct procedure would be to replace the ballcock, if faulty.

Thanks for advice. Ok just down from attic! The smaller one seems like overflow for heating. No drips and ballcock sitting in water about half way down.
In the bigger tank. The water level is near to top but about inch and a half from the white overflow pipe. With nothing being used in the house there is a constant drip from the copper fitting coming from where it is fitted from side of tank ..that is the one on the ballcock...I would have thought there should be no drip there.
When the cold tap was turned on for 10 seconds or so in kitchen ..a considerable flow of water came into tank from this fitting.
I presume it is just a new ballcock required. Is it just a matter of carefully removing the one there now and replacing it. Thks a lot for advice.

Don't forget to turn off the mains water supply to the house and leave the kitchen cold tap in the on position before attempting to change the ball-cock in the tank.

Great advice ! Wouldn't have ...is that to empty the tank fully? I was watching a you tube video and if I follow that it seems it's only necessary to replace washers and seems quite doable for DIY guy.thks
