My 09 Kia Picanto failed on emissions (127K on the clock)

the garage are saying a new catalyic converter is required but it is very expensive to replace (no price yet)

is it worth my while or should i just scrap the car?

i have just paid 300e for a service, sump replacement and handbrake - am i just throwing good money after bad?

    thanks

If you can get hold of the cert and post the figures up here someone might be able to give an idea how bad the results are and if a new catalyic converter is only solution. If it's only marginally out you might get away with adding something like Redex or similar cleaner to the petrol and drive it hard before the test to get a pass.

step 1: put €10 - 15 of petrol into the car.
step 2: buy a bottle of dipetane
step 3: pour the whole bottle of dipetane into the car
step4: rally it out the motorway for about 30 mins before the test
step5: enjoy your new NCT cert

    there's no guarantee of that

you'd need to see the numbers first

Also even if a Italian tune up (diptane and hard driving) doens't fix it there may well be cheaper options then the garage i.e. second hand cat from a scrappy and independent garage.
